  1. Character Development Creating a Mythological Character

  2. What makes a character universal? The best writers, who write the best stories, know how to create unforgettable characters that transcend time & cultures.

  3. Creating a Mythological Character of Your Own • In this project, you will be using your imagination and the elements we have learned in class to create a mythological character (mythological creatures, gods, goddesses, demi-gods, titans, nymphs, etc.)

  4. 3 Project Components • Character Questionnaire • Character Depiction • Narrative

  5. We will discuss the questionnaire after we go over the depiction & narrative.

  6. Depiction of your Character • You will draw or “depict” your character. • The traits, physical qualities, and powers must be logical (based on which mythological characters you combine to make yours). • Be creative. You do not need to be a great artist.

  7. Narrative • Once you have created your character, you will write a narrative that explains from whom/where your demi-god came and how some of your character’s traits are universal.

  8. Use the stories we have been reading (or that you have read on your own) as inspiration for your creature’s unique characteristics & attributes.

  9. Component 1: The Questionnaire • To start, answer the following basic questions about your character. • You must complete this preliminary questionnaire before you start your depiction or your narrative.

  10. Directions • On loose leaf paper (that is not sloppy or torn out), copy the following questions on each slide. • Leave room for your response. • You do not have to copy anything in parentheses. • You will turn this in, so write neatly or plan to rewrite it.

  11. Question #1 • What type of mythological creature are you creating? (A titan, god, goddess, demi-god, nymph, half-animal, monster, or other)

  12. Question #2 • Which Latin root word is used to make your name? What does it mean and how does it attribute to your mythological self? (Including a correctly used Latin root word is required.)

  13. Example Latin Root Words(You do not have to copy this.) • Arch- first, chief, ruler • Aster/astra- star • Luc- light • Phil- love • Terr- earth • Agu- water • Areta- virtue • Aur- gold • Call- beautiful • Can/cin/cant- sing • Dyna- power • Flor- flower • Kudo- glory • Lun- moon • Pyr- fire • Orinth- bird

  14. Question #3 • Which myth or creature inspired you? • Explain.

  15. Question #4 • Which of the 8 essential components of mythology does your mythological character exemplify? • (Explains nature, rewards/punishment, superhuman powers, magic, violence, human emotions, disguises)

  16. Question #5 • Does your creature have important parents or grandparents? • Who are they? (This will explain most of your characteristics.)

  17. Question #6 • Do you have any special powers or curses?

  18. Question #7 • How & when were you created?

  19. Question #8 • What do you look like?

  20. Question #9 • What is your symbol? Why did you choose it? • How does it apply?

  21. Question #10 • Do you have any special weapons or pets?

  22. Question #11 • Who are your friends? Who are your enemies?

  23. Question #12 • What is your disposition? (Does your character feel lucky, cursed, angry, heroism, a sense of duty, shock, envy, conceit, or something else?)
