  3. What Companies Are Looking For Cornerstone Belief of Behavior Based Interviewing: “Past performance is the BEST predictor of future performance.”

  4. The Questions STARs • Situation/Task • What was the background? • What was the situation? • How did this come about? • How did you become involved? • Action • What did you do? • What did you say? • What happened next? • What was your role? • Results • What results did you get? • How did it turn out? • What feedback have you gotten? • What were the outcomes?

  5. The Answers • Be aware of giving false STARs • Vague Statements (“usually,” “generally,” “a lot,” “we”) • Opinions (“I think,” “I feel”) • Theoretical (“would have,” “plan to”) • Striving to find specifics to record • Don’t use “Smoke and Mirrors”

  6. The Answers Common Situations • Cannot think of an example • Let the interviewer know you need a moment • Ask them a question if you don’t understand • Evasive or vague responses • The interviewer will probe for more details • The interviewer may tell you they need more specific details

  7. The Answers Common Situations (continued) • Rambling – don’t do it • Sometimes more is TOO much • “We versus I” • Be sure to say what your role actually was • “I always… “ or “I would…” • Be sure to give an example

  8. The Answers Common Situations that need REDIRECTING • Close-ended: Did you… • Leading: I assume… • Multiple Choice: Are you task or people oriented? • Hypothetical: Suppose… How would you? • Anything not job-related

  9. It’s all in the way they ask the question….

  10. What Do You Think? Behavioral or Non-Behavioral?

  11. What Do You Think? Behavioral or Non-Behavioral?

  12. Remember…. • The applicant can help direct the interview by answering in the STAR method even if the interviewer does not utilize Behavior Based Interviewing techniques • This allows you to give your stellar examples and stand out in comparison to others • You are helping the interviewer get the information they need

  13. Remember • Avoid negative comments or admissions • What is one weakness you have? • Tell me about a time when you failed at a project • Avoid anything too personal or medical • Accentuate the positive/Highlight the good • Assist the interviewer with getting the best information for their records • Know Thy Self

  14. Thinking Behaviorally • Tell me about a time when you had a difficult project to complete. • Tell me about a time when you had a co-worker that annoyed you. • Tell me about a time when you didn’t agree with a decision your boss made. • Tell me about a time when you had to convince someone about an idea you had. • Tell me about a time when you faced an ethical situation. • What did you do to prepare for this interview?
