  2. Chapters 1-6 • Indignant- (adj)- Angry at something unjust or wrong; wrath; passionate; irate. • Chastise- (v)- To punish or criticize severely; rebuke. • Cowered- (v) – To cringe in fear.

  3. Chapters 1-6 (con’t) • Meticulous –(adj) – Extremely careful and precise; Extremely or excessively concerned with details. • Predicament- (n)- An unpleasant or troublesome situation in which there seems to be no way out. • Coax – (v) To ask or persuade in a gentle, flattering manner; wheedle.

  4. Chapters 1-6 (con’t) • Incendiary – (Adj) – Stirring up trouble, rebellion, or the like. • Moot- (adj) – Of no practical importance; irrelevant.

  5. Chapters 7-12 • Clamor- (n)- A loud outcry; protest; hubbub. • Transfixed –(adj)- Rendered motionless, as with terror. • Pristine – (adj)- Remaining in a pure state; uncorrupted.

Chapters 7-12 (con’t) • Respite- (n) – A short interval of rest of relief; postponement. • Implore- (v)- To entreat; beseech; beg. • Fatalistic- (Adj)- Believing that all events are predetermined by fate. • Barrage- (n)- A rapid, concentrated outpouring. • Jubilant- (adj)- Feeling or expressing great joy.

  7. Chapters 13-18 • Vigilance – (n)- Alert watchfulness; care; caution. • Turmoil- (n)- State of extreme confusion or agitation; commotion; disquiet. • Adamant- (adj)- Unsusceptible to persuasion; impervious to pleas, appeals, or reason.

  8. Chapters 13-16 (con’t) • Careened- (v)- To rush headlong or carelessly; to lurch or swerve while in motion. • Vicarious – (adj) – Felt or undergone as if one were taking part in the experience or feelings of another. • Emaciated- (adj)- Extremely thin, especially as a result of starvation.

  9. Chapters 13-16 (con’t) • Mulling – (v)- To go over extensively in the mind; ponder. • Accolades- (n)- Expression of approval; praise; acknowledgement; award.
