  1. Mixtures Chapter 10, Lesson 2

  2. What are mixtures? • A physical combination of substances. • Trail mix • Tossed salad • Lemonade • Components keep their original properties and can be separated back out relatively easily.

  3. What are mixtures? • Heterogeneous mixture – mixtures that have different parts that you can easily see. • Suspension – a heterogeneous mixture that appear to be the same all the way through but may settle out into different parts • Colloid – a special type of suspension that does not settle out – smoke, mayo, foam

  4. What are solutions? • Solution – a mixture that blends so that it is the same throughout • Kool-aid • Solute – the part of a solution that GETS dissolved • Drink mix • Solvent – the part of the solution that DOES the dissolving • water

  5. What are solutions? • Gases form solutions easier than liquids. • Liquids form solutions easier than solids. • Alloy – a solution of a metal and another solid (usually a second metal)

  6. What are solutions? • Solubility – the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a solvent • Depends upon temperature • Water is the universal solvent because it can dissolve so many things.

  7. Separating Mixtures • Dissolving • Filtering • Magnet • Density • Distillation – process of separating liquids using evaporation and condensation • Chromatography – separating substances in a liquid based on the rate they travel up a special paper
