  6. A story from the 1930s • A girl meets a boy and they fall in love. The girl graduates from high school. She has visions of career success and wants to go to college. • Her parents prefer that she get married and raise a family. • Undaunted, the girl goes to college & marries the boy. • This married couple is Ruth and Elliot Handler • The raise two children • Barbie and Ken

  7. The Handlers owned a company that made wooden picture frames. • Elliot and his partner Harold Mattson built the samples and Ruth marketed them. • Elliot used the scraps of wood to make doll furniture • Their company was named Mattel • MATT for Mattson, EL for Elliot

  8. Brief History of Barbie 1959: Ruth Handler Wanted her daughter, Barbara, to go beyond “paper dolls” Based on the German Lilli doll, a risqué novelty item from a cartoon intended for men Barbie toned down and cleaned up for America First-year fashions: "Wedding Day Dress" and the Dixie-themed "Plantation Belle" Blondes outnumber brunettes 2 to 1 1960: The Notorious K.E.N. Ken makes the scene: head of fuzzy hair, then blond or brown paint.

  9. The first Barbie: March 1959 Notice how the stripes accentuate the positive.

  10. 1964: Barbie's little sister, Skipper, and best friend, Midge, are introduced. Midge = less intimidating and sensual Instead of marrying and becoming pregnant, Barbie would babysit 1965: Barbie suits up as Miss Astronaut -- years before women are actually accepted into the space program. That's one small step for woman… 1968: Barbie speaks for the first time. At the pull of a string, she utters six phrases, including "I have a date tonight!" and "I love being a fashion model!" Ken disappears, but returns in 1969 with bigger muscles, bendable knees, and a speaking voice.

  11. African-American Barbie • "Colored Francie" made her debut in 1967, and she is sometimes described as the first African-American Barbie doll. • However, she was produced using the existing head molds for the white Francie doll and lacked African characteristics other than dark skin. • The first African-American doll in the Barbie range is usually regarded as Christie, who made her debut in 1968. • Black Barbie was launched in 1980 but still had white features. • In September 2009, Mattel introduced the “So In Style” range, which was intended to create a more realistic depiction of black people than previous dolls.

  12. African-American Barbie • In 1997, Mattel and Nabisco cross-promoted Barbie with Oreos. • Oreo Fun Barbie was marketed as someone with whom little girls could play and share "America's favorite cookie." • As had become the custom, Mattel manufactured both a white and a black version. • Critics argued that in the African-American community Oreo is a derogatory term meaning that the person is "black on the outside and white on the inside," like the chocolate sandwich cookie itself. • The doll was unsuccessful and Mattel recalled the unsold stock, making it sought after by collectors.

  13. 1980: Diversified line - Hispanic, Italian, Parisian, Royal U.K., Native American no Asian American Barbie until 2002 1981: cowboy chic with Western Barbie. new fashion line is "Westward Ho" 1989: becomes all that she can be joins U.S. Army. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps fashions follow

  18. 2000: Barbie runs for President. campaign issues: equality, world peace, animal kindness, education, and the environment. Meanwhile, Mattel introduced “Fashion Doll 2000” Return to ultra-glam fashion doll roots with a "millennium makeover," complete with sultry gaze and heavy make-up

  19. Barbiology Every second, two Barbie dolls are purchased somewhere in the world. Average U.S. girl between ages of 3 and 10 owns 10 Barbies Placed head to toe, all the Barbie dolls sold since 1959 would circle the earth more than 7 times.

  20. 124,000 Barbie listings on eBay, as of March 2011 • Probably over 100,000 avid Barbie collectors. • 90% are women, at an average age of 40, purchasing more than twenty Barbie dolls each year. 45% percent of them spend upwards of $1000 a year. • Vintage Barbie dolls from the early years are the most valuable • while the original Barbie was sold for $3.00 in 1959, a mint boxed Barbie from 1959 sold for $3500.00 on eBay in October 2004. • In September 2006, a Barbie doll (Midnight Red from 1956) set a world record at auction with a price of $17,000

  21. Barbiology During Barbie's introductory year in 1959, Mattel sold 350,000 dolls Barbie is now a $2 billion / year industry Barbie has had more than 75 careers, from registered nurse to rock star; from a bride to a pregnant women. Barbie is marketed in more than 140 countries worldwide.

  22. Why are there no old people in “Barbieland”? No parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles: no one older than Barbie, who shifts from teen student and young career woman

  23. Higher-Level Thinking Does Barbie idealize the female body? Do parents and kids who buy the doll attempt to emulate Barbie’s appearance? Is the term “Barbie Doll” a negative one, signifying an attractive, but empty, blonde who will do what she is told? “It’s just so silly. It’s just a doll and it’s just a fantasy. You make the situation. No matter which doll it is you play with as a child, YOU make up the idea. The doll doesn’t matter.” Toy collector, Montclair NJ

  24. A role model for your body? Researchers generated a computer model of a woman with Barbie-doll proportions: her back would be too weak to support the weight of her upper body her body would be too narrow to contain more than half a liver and a few centimeters of bowel A real woman built that way would suffer from chronic diarrhea and eventually die from malnutrition

  25. Promoting an unrealistic idea of body image? • A standard Barbie doll is 11.5 inches tall, giving a height of 5 feet 9 inches at 1/6 scale. • measurements estimated at 36 inches (chest), 18 inches (waist) and 33 inches (hips). • she would lack the 17 to 22% body fat required for a woman to menstruate. • In 1963, the outfit "Barbie Baby-Sits" came with a book entitled How to Lose Weight which advised: "Don't eat.” • "Slumber Party" in 1965 contained a pink bathroom scale permanently set at 110 lbs., which = 35 lbs. underweight for a woman 5 feet 9 inches tall.

  26. In 1997, Barbie's body mold was redesigned and given a wider waist. Mattel said this would make the doll better suited to contemporary fashion designs.

  27. Barbie's waist has been widened in more recent versions of the doll. “a more natural body shape – less busty with wider hips”

  28. Cindy Jackson • She was so influenced by Barbie that it became her life mission to look exactly like her. • Her obsession to look like Barbie started when her parents bought her first Barbie at the age of 6. • She spent nearly 55,000 and underwent 20 plastic surgery operations to reach her goal

  32. In September 2003, Saudi Arabia outlawed the sale of Barbie dolls, saying that she did not conform to the ideals of Islam • “Barbie dolls, with their revealing clothes and shameful postures, accessoriesand tools are a symbol of decadence to the perverted West. Let us beware of her dangers and be careful.” • The Fulla doll is similar to Barbie, but more acceptable to Middle East countries • In Iran, the Sara and Dara dolls are available as an alternative With slowing sales, Barbie gets a makeover http://video.today.msnbc.msn.com/today/13494714#13494714 2:10
