  1. PowerPoint and Public Speaking Mrs. Mayo West Carteret High School Graduation Project

How many? • How many of you have done a PowerPoint for a class assignment? • How many of you had to present it in class as an oral presentation? • The goals today are: • Give you tips about your presentation • Refresh some of your knowledge about PowerPoint • Give you some things to think about as you practice your speaking skills

General Presentation Guidelines • 8 -15 minutes • Majority must be a verbal description of the project • Visuals - demonstrations, video, PowerPoints, or other aids • Question/response 5 minutes after your presentation • Presentation Equipment Needs Form to the Mrs. Mayo by the designated due date (conference)

GP Notebook Suggestions • Introduction - shake hands with judges when entering the room • 1 slide: This slide should have your name and what you did for your product. • 1 slide: Name and thank your mentor. Explain what your mentor does or where he or she works and why/how you chose your mentor. Name and thank your advisor and explain your connection to this staff member. • Paper Information • 3-5 slides: State the topic of your research paper. Choose 3 or 4 of the most important things you learned from your research; each point can be a separate slide. •  Reason for Choosing Topic • 1 slide: Why did you pick this paper topic and project? Was there personal significance to the subject? •  Explain Your Project Step-by-Step • Slide number will vary (minimum of 5): Begin with the first thing you did. Go through the process step-by-step. Use specific details of the project process. This is where you will discuss your work with your mentor (important to focus on how your mentor helped you). Explain the valuable learning that happened during each phase. Explain the final product. Include pictures of your completing your project. Unless you are taking the judges to a different location, this is where you would illustrate, demonstrate, perform or exhibit your final product. •  Expand on Your Experiences • 1-2 slides: You should address accomplishments from this project as well as obstacles you overcame. You may mention problems or frustrations you encountered during the project process; however, emphasize how you overcame these problems. • 1-2 slides: Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself? Talk about how you stretched and grew as an individual during the project process, what this told you about yourself, how it might have benefited others, and why this is important to future seniors. Give specific examples/stories from the process. You may mention your own personal weaknesses but only in the light of how you have improved. Go beyond just saying you procrastinated. Look at your self-evaluation. •  Conclusion • 1 slide: Your speech needs closure; do not simply stop talking. What was the best part? What made you proud or excited? • 1 slide: Your last slide should say, "Thank you for your attention. Do you have any questions?" to remind you that this will cue your teacher to stop timing. If you are taking your judges to another location, answer their questions first.

  6. Using Outline Form • Outlin what you want to say, then begin you’re PowerPoint • Using outline form will also help with you’re formating

Adding Pictures • Use one picture per slide, don’t confuse your audience • Be sure to save the picture and not just copy and paste (to the same place as your PowerPoint, i.e. flash drive) • USE YOUR OWN PICTURES OF THE PROCESS! • Cite all pictures, videos, quotes, etc. at the end of your presentation or as a footnote (unless you only used Clip Art from Microsoft) • Make sure the picture relates to what you are talking about

Adding Video or YouTube Videos • Videos are better if they are of you completing your project • YouTube is useful ONLY if it illustrates the a process you can’t show otherwise, do NOT use it to teach your subject • Remember! You are not teaching the subject of your paper, you are explaining your project, paper, and portfolio.

  16. How to Save your PowerPoint • Save on the G:/ drive (server) AND a flash drive • May also want to save in PowerPoint 2007 so that you can show it on a school computer • I have flash drives • TEST, TEST, TEST!! =

  17. Appearance • Professional vs. Appropriate dress • Men’s attire & Women’s attire • Items to avoid wearing: • Jingling jewelry • Flip flops • T-shirts & shorts • Revealing items

  18. Presentation Rubric • GO WITH WHAT IS SUGGESTED as this is EXACTLY what is on the rubric 55% • Be aware that you are also graded on your speaking skills (polished, polite) 30% • Time Cards 15% • Reflect, Reflect, Reflect!!

  19. Slow Down! 20-20 rule “That’s a Good Question” Breathe in instead of pausing with “ums” and “likes” Don’t apologize Come early Keys to a Great Graduation Project Presentation

  20. Final Tips • Know your material • Eye contact • Shaking hands • Use notes, but don’t read • Movement & fidgeting • Smile
