  1. Addition and Subtraction Equations Created by Christine Berg Edited by V Hamilton

  2. Inverse Operations: Addition is the opposite of subtraction and vice versa

  3. Models = Variable = 1 = -1

  4. Subtraction Property of Equality You can subtract the same value from both sides of an equation

  5. Example: Arithmetic: 5 = 5 5 – 2 = 5 – 2

  6. Example: Algebraic: If a = b then a – c = b – c

  7. Example: x + 2 = 4 x + 2 – 2 = 4 – 2 x = 2

  8. Example: x + 2 = 4

  9. Example: Subtract 2 from each side

  10. Example: x = 2

  11. Addition Property of Equality You can add the same value to both sides of an equation

  12. Example: Arithmetic: 9 = 9 9 + 2 = 9 + 2

  13. Example: Algebraic: If a = b then a + c = b + c

  14. Example: x - 2 = 4 x - 2 + 2 = 4 + 2 x = 6

  15. Example: x - 2 = 4

  16. Example: + + x – 2 + 2 = 4 + 2

  17. Example: x = 6

  18. In your own words write what you learned from this lesson.
