  1. Testing Soil pH

  2. Focus Questions Is there a connection between the pH level of soil and the amount of humus (organic matter) found in it?

  3. Background Information/Discussion • Today, you are going to test soil samples for pH levels. • A pH level tells how acidic a soil sample is. • If a soil sample is acidic, it is not as nutrient-rich. A pH less than 7 is considered low.

  4. Hypothesis Observe each soil sample with your hand lense. Discuss with your group. Write your hypothesis.

  5. Materials 1 petri dish of sand 1 petri dish of potting soil 1 petri dish of compost 3 pH test strips spoons distilled water

  6. Procedure Mix a spoonful of sand and a little distilled water. Test the mixture by dipping the pH strip in it. Write down your results. Repeat this process with the potting soil and the compost.

  7. Results Make this chart in your science notebook and record your results:

  8. Conclusion Now, return to your focus questions – Which sample had the highest pH? Did that sample have a lot of humus? What is the connection between humus and pH level? What does this say about growing a garden and pH levels?

  9. Conclusion Now, return to your focus questions – 2. Which soil DO you think would sustain life best? Why do you think so?
