  3. Materials • GOGGLES • 1 penny • 25ml water • Bunsen Burner + Hose • Scales • Tongs • 50 or 100ml plastic beaker • Calorimeter • 2 Cups/half Cup • Cup/Insulating sleeve/lid • Thermometer

  4. Why are we doing this? • We want to measure the heat produced by the bunsen burner • It’s not very effective to hold a thermometer in the flame – it is also not very safe • This allows us to measure the energy change indirectly

  5. What energy changes are happening?

  6. Set Up • Weigh out 25g of water in a 50 or 100ml plastic beaker • Place the beaker inside the calorimeter • Set up calorimeter and measure the initial temperature of the water • Weigh the penny • Hook your bunsen burner up to the gas with a hose

  8. Safety and Other Instructions • Wear goggles any time you are conducting or near any experiment. • Tie back any long hair/no scarves • Don’t Burn the Calorimeter! – don’t touch the penny or tongs to the styrofoam

  9. Procedure • Open vents on the burner, light the bunsen burner, try to get a nice blue flame and inner cone (adjust vents) • Take the penny with tongs and hold it in the inner cone of the flame until it reaches thermal equilibrium. • Quickly release the penny into the small beaker in the calorimeter. Close the lid and swirl gently/stir with the thermometer. • Watch the thermometer and record the temperature when it reaches its highest point. • Let water and penny cool to approx room temperature and repeat the experiment 2x for precision • To turn off the burner, completely turn off gas supply.

  10. Adjusting the Burner • The flame should not be very high, hold the penny at the tip of the inside cone. It is the hottest point. • Make sure the vents are open on the burner

  11. Safety and Other Instructions • The penny is still hot once you take it off the flame! • Instead of using a stir stick you can gently swirl the calorimeter or stir with the thermometer • if you do it too vigorously, the water may spill • We will do the experiment THREE times for precision
