  1. Chapter 8: Reading, Writing, and Presenting DO NOW: What is effective reading? What is effective writing? What is effective presenting? Write down your answers.

  2. Group Activity… In your groups, determine who will be the reader(s), the writer, and the presenter. The reader is the only person who is allowed to read the article • Reader: Read the article. • Writer: Have the reader explain to you, verbally, what the article is about and write a summary. • Presenter: Present your groups information to the class and describe how you would design your presentation.

Reading is just reading, right? • Reading isn’t a race • Fast Food vs. Fine Dining • Effective Techniques: • Re-read; even with breaks! • Take notes in the margins; write what and why statements • Highlight, underline, circle • Use a dictionary; notecards! • Make copies and re-paste sections together • Make an outline/ mind map

  4. Writing- It is a process! • 1. Prewriting • Understand what the assignment is asking for • Who is the audience? • Research! • Strong thesis statement • Set writing goals/deadlines • 2. Writing • What’s on your mind? • Purpose of the paper is… • Tutoring • Change the audience • Play a role • 3. Rewriting (Revision) • Set it aside for awhile • Feedback! • Edit! Edit! Edit! • Proofread out loud

  6. …Group Activity Continued Now, using effective techniques for reading, writing, and presenting from the e-book and class, do the following again: Everyone is allowed to read the article Reader: Read the article. Circle and underline key words/concepts. Make a mind map. Writer: Have the reader explain to you what the article is about, verbally, and write it using effective writing techniques and outline. Presenter: Using the blank slide show handout, present your groups information to the class and describe how you would design your presentation to be the best presentation ever! As a group, complete the reading, writing, and presenting handout. Share at least 1 answer with the class.
