  2. Periods of Music History • Medieval/Rennaissance 1300-1600 • Baroque 1600-1750 • Classical 1750-1850 • Romantic 1800-1900 • Contemporary 1900-Present

  3. 1300-1600 • Music was mostly written for church use • Pope Gregory had a specific style of music named after him. It was Gregorian chant. • Children were given to the church to become priests and nuns. • Women were NOT allowed to sing in the church services. • Most music in this era had no time signatures

  4. The Voice • The Voice was the major instrument. Everyone had a voice; it was easy to make music by singing. • Young men and boys sang in church. • Singing only with the voice, and no other instruments was the ‘rule’. This was called “A Capella”, or “in the style of the church.

  5. Castrati • Since women were not allowed to sing in church, keeping soprano voices in the choir was important. • Some young men were altered to sing soprano the rest of their lives. • This practice was allowed until the late 1800’s.
