  1. air • planet •people NCAR UCP Integrated Information Services (IIS) The Curriculum Customization Service: Increasing access to customized STEM learning UCP Open House May 8, 2014

  2. Project Goals Increase achievement for all students through: • Rigorous, learner-centered STEM curricula • Software services powering customization for diverse learners • Hub consortium enabling research-district-publisher partnership for systemic change • Study impact on teaching and learning

  3. Project History • NSF funding in 2008 to develop middle and high school Earth science exemplars in partnership with Denver Public Schools and It’s About Time • Participatory design process with teacher advisory board to develop the Curriculum Customization Service • Additional funding 2011-12 , expanding to 6 districts in 3 states and additional content areas, customized view for each, research on adoption and student learning • Cyberlearning funding 2013-15 – integrate Algebra 1, develop Task Rating Rubric with teacher advisory board, develop classroom implementation supports. Redesign Biology to align to NGSS

  4. Participatory Design • Involves intended user in iterative design process to ensure that the end product meets their needs and is highly usable • Provides a forum for rich professional learning by the participants

  5. The CCS provides customized views for each school district, integrating and contextualizing digital library resources, and fostering collegial sharing of materials and ideas • Student Text and Instructional Support Materials • Interactive digital library resources for differentiation • Collections of “My Stuff” and “Shared Stuff” • Create lesson plans and “playlists” • District scope and sequence information • District-specific lessons and Safari Montage videos • Educational Standards

  6. CCS Research Program • Mixed method data collection • weblogs, surveys, interviews, observation, student assessment • Adoption and use of CCS Services • Support for teachers’ planning and instruction processes, including differentiated instruction • Use of interactive resources in the classroom • Support for teachers’ professional learning community • Collaborative design process, and impacts on teaching in enacting the selected algebra tasks in the classroom • Student learning outcomes • District level factors that influence the above

  7. What Teachers Say I tried to use it with almost every lesson that I could… We have so many second-language learners that they needed the [visual] resources provided in the system. I saw that some teachers had uploaded some really high-level PowerPoint [slideshows]. It made me wonder if my expectations were too low for my students. It [the Hub] is a space for me to save my materials on that won’t be erased…It actually has cut down on [my] random searching on the Internet. I think that since students are visual learners, they're hands-on learners, they're growing up in this technological age… Seeing [digital resources such as] animations really drives home the idea or the topic… I ask them if it helps [to see graphic representations]… If whatever they just viewed made the material make more sense, and often times, they [say] "Wow… That totally made sense… Can we see it again?"

  8. Results to Date Strong uptake and adoption (68%) Helps teachers to use their time more efficiently (80%) and increased their awareness of other teachers’ practice (61%) Would recommend it to another educator (91%) Teachers used interactive resources in their teaching with greater frequency, confidence, effectiveness Teachers differentiated to support high needs learners, offer alternative representations of science concepts, and to improve student engagement Increased student learning outcomes on district standardized tests

  12. Create Personalized Collections for Customized Instruction Resources you have created or use (ppt, documents, video, urls) can be uploaded into your “MyStuff” area and then (optionally) shared with colleagues “SharedStuff”. You can also organize, sequence and annotate resources, creating lesson plans or other new resources using the “Create Playlist” option.

  13. A Simple “Playlist” Interactive Resource from DL Free text – notes or instructions Blackline Master from text/curriculum Shared stuff item Assessment from text/curriculum

  14. Google Calendar Integration

  15. High School Algebra Curriculum • District scope and sequence trajectory aligned to CCSS • Discovering Algebra student text and teacher guide • District-specific Additional Core Lessons and Instructional Tasks • Supplemental Tasks aligned to lessons and rated along several dimensions (cognitive demand, language, and technology) and aligned to the CCSSM • Digital library resources from the National Science Digital Library (nsdl.org) • Dynamic Algebra Exploration interactives • Teacher-contributed resources

  16. High School Biology Redesign • DPS Teacher Advisory Board, DPS staff, BSCS and and CU researchers working to develop new curriculum aligned to NGSS • Workshop in June 2014 • Pilot new content in Fall 2014
