  1. Free Throw Shooting

  2. Problem • Who shoots better at free throws boys or girls?

  3. Introduction I chose this testing because I wanted to see what would happen if boys go up against girls in free throw shooting percentage. There always seems to be competition between the gi5rls and boys.

  4. Background Information Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith. A basketball court is 94ft. By 50ft. There is 19ft from the free throw line to the baseline and 15ft. To the rim. A men’s NBA basketball is 29 ½ to 29 ¾ in. An NCAA basketball’s maximum circumference is 30”. A woman's NBA basketball maximum circumference is 29” in the NCAA the maximum circumference is 29” with a weight of 20 oz.

  5. Background continued A men’s basketball weights 22 oz. The hoop is 19” in diameter and 10 ft. high. One tip for free throws shooting is to be consistent in your technique You should put your left hand on the side of the ball if you are a right hander.

  6. Hypotheses I predict boys will have a better shooting percentage than girls.

  7. Materials • Women’s basketball • Pen or pencil • Paper • 7 boys and 7 girls • computer • Camera • Gym/basketball floor and a hoop

  8. Procedure • Gather all materials • Each player will have 2 practice shots • Everyone will have 10 free throws • Record shooting percentage

  9. Major Observation • Some people where not trying to shoot the ball. • Some people where trying to shoot the ball.

  10. Results • Girls total shots made was 15 and then had 55 that they missed • Girls average was 27% • Boys made 35 shoots and missed 35 • boys average was 50%

  11. Conclusion My hypothesis was correct. The girls made 27% of there free throws, but the boys made 50% of there free throws.

  12. Possible Application This information can help basketball coaches by show them how well they can expect their players to shoot free throws.

  13. Possible cause of error • I used a women’s basketball • Some where used to a men’s basketball

  14. Further Research • More people or same people shooting different shoots.

  15. Time Spent I spent a few weeks on searching about basketball. Then I got people to test for a few days in science and explore class.

  16. Bibliography I went to www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/free_throw

  17. Acknowledgements I would like to thank Mrs. Riffle and Mrs. Ball for letting me use her basketball
