  1. How Can Green Hydrogen Fuel Benefit the Shipping Industry? The shipping industry accounts for nearly 3% of all carbon emissions in the world. As per a study by the IMO, maritime transport emits close to 940 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. These are concerning figures. If you’re planning to invest incruise ships for sale, it is important for you to know about the challenges being faced by the industry. The IMO has asked the maritime sector to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by the year 2050 in order to meet the climate change objectives under the Paris Agreement. As a step to reduce their carbon emissions, industry stakeholders need to invest in alternative fuels. In this blog, we look at how green hydrogen fuel can help the shipping industry. What is Green Hydrogen? According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), hydrogen fuels could help reduce 80 per cent of carbon emissions in the shipping industry by 2050. But pure hydrogen is not easily available on earth. It is found in water and organic compounds such as methane. Pure hydrogen gas has to be produced artificially from fossil fuels through carbon-intensive processes. Hydrogen fuels can be divided into three different groups based on how they are produced.  Grey hydrogen– This type of fuel is produced using carbon-based fossil fuels, which emits carbon dioxide during the process.  Blue hydrogen– This type of fuel is produced using natural gas, which makes the carbon emissions released from the process slightly cleaner than grey hydrogen.  Green hydrogen– This type of fuel is produced by electrolysis, a process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The byproduct of this process is oxygen, not carbon dioxide, hence, resulting in zero emissions.

  2. Green hydrogen is an alternative fuel that can be greatly beneficial for the shipping industry. Produced using a renewable resource like water, it is a clean, green, and sustainable fuel choice. As per a market intelligence report, the global production of green hydrogen is expected to reach 5.7 million tons by 2030 with a CAGR of 57 per cent. Advantages  Hydrogen is abundant One molecule of water is made up of two hydrogen atoms. Since water makes up 70 per cent of the earth, it would not be wrong to say that hydrogen is the most abundant element available on the planet. Thus, it will never fall short of supply.  It is environmentally friendly Green hydrogen is produced through a completely carbon-free process. It is a clean and eco- friendly alternative.  Fuel can be easily transported Green hydrogen has to be compressed and stored in tanks. This allows the fuel to be transported easily wherever wanted.  It can be used for zero-carbon shipping Maritime companies can use green hydrogen fuel to achieve the industry’s zero-carbon shipping goals. It will also help global economies to reduce their net emissions. Challenges  Flammability Hydrogen can be extremely flammable, hence, must be handled very carefully. Sipping companies need to take special precautions while transporting it.  Expensive The cost of producing green hydrogen is significantly more than producing grey or blue hydrogen. Thus, it is an expensive fuel. Conclusion If you have been thinking about entering the shipping industry, you must be informed of the current challenges the industry is facing.
