PURPOSEAlternative schools must meet the same standards for curriculum, instruction, and student performance as traditional schools, but they meet these objectives by offering a different structure, learning philosophy, or academic emphasis. This enables them to accommodate different student needs, interests and learning styles, and foster student engagement and achievement. California Department of Education

  4. Independence High Schoolserves a diverse population. Many of ourstudents . . . • Desire a smaller, more personal environment. • Prefer to work and learn at their own speed. • Are distracted and frustrated in a large, active classroom. • Cannot physically or mentally withstand a full day of school. • Have health issues including social anxiety and panic disorders. • Have had prior poor attendance and/or behavior issues. • Are Teenage Parents. • Need to work to help support their family.
