  1. Metals

  2. Metallic Bonds • Metals are made up of very closely packed cations which are surrounded by a seas of valence electrons • The attraction between the electrons and the cations is what helps them keep their shape

  3. Properties • The sea of valence electrons is what makes the physical properties of metals possible • They are ductile and malleable because the electrons allow the cations to move freely • They conduct electricity well because the electrons are not held in fixed positions and can move freely

  4. Crystal Structure • Metals still have a crystal structure to their atomic arrangement • These structures determine the physical appearance of the metals • The next slides show three such examples

  5. Body Centered Cubic • The shape of the crystal structure is shown on the left, the picture below it is of potassium

  6. Face Centered Cubic • Face center cubic crystal structure is shown on the left • Copper, gold, aluminum and silver are examples of face centered crystal elements

  7. Hexagonal Close Packed • Hexagonal close packed metals create a structure like the one shown above on the left • Zinc is a metal with this structure, shown below

  8. Alloys • Alloys are a combination of two metals, which cause it to have better properties than the elements by themselves • There are two types of alloys, interstitial and substitutional • The difference between the two is based on the relative size of the elements involved
