Who were the ANC…? • African National Congress • Formed in 1912 • Formed to unite the African people and challenge the political, social, and economic situation in South Africa at the time • Aimed to voice the opinions of workers/peasants/suppressed people who had no say.
What did they do?? • Boycotts • Non violent protests • Strikes • Armed Struggle
Campaign for the Defiance of unjust laws • 1952 Campaign for the Defiance of unjust laws • They travelled across the country to organize protests against discriminatory policies • They promoted the Freedom Charter, ratified by the Congress of the People in 1955.

Who was he? • He studied law at University where he first became involved in anti-apartheid protesting • He joined the ANC in 1942 • He took part in and instigated non violent protest action • He was arrested in 1956 along with 150 other political protestors-They were acquitted
The ANC and Mandela • He instigated the Armed Struggle of the ANC • Believed non-violent action was not making a big enough impact • He initiated a three-day strike of the workers in 1961 and was arrested the following year for leading it again
Mandela and prison • Arrested and imprisoned on Robben Island for 18 years. Spent a further 9 years in Pollsmore prison. • Released 1990 • 1991 became the president of the ANC • His Aim: To achieve the right to vote for Blacks
Release from prison • Mandela was released from prison in 1990 after a change of presidency and a lift on the ban of the ANC actions. • 1991 became the president of the ANC • 1994 The first multi racial elections were conducted. Mandela was elected as the first black president of South Africa.
