  4. Assassination Plot • Booth wanted to kill • President Lincoln • Vice President Johnson • And Secretary of State Seward • He wanted to take them all out in one night

  5. The Plot Thickens • Booth Shot Lincoln and jumped from the balcony to the stage • Yelled, “Sic Semper Tyrannis” • Death to the tyrants • Seward was severely wounded • The man that was suppose to kill Johnson lost his nerve

Andrew Johnson • Distrusted by fellow republicans • Because he was once a democrat • Born a poor southern farmer • Radicals wanted his to call a special session of Congress and make new rules for the South • Johnson said no, he was going to follow Lincolns plan for reconstruction • However • He alone would decide when the Southern States had fulfilled Lincoln’s requirements not Congress

  7. Southern Conventions • Johnson suggested that Southern States should • Refuse to pay war debts • Adopt the 13th amendment • Freed all the slaves • Nullify their ordinances of secession

Why you must be clear with directions • South Carolina – repealed rather than nullified its ordinance • Mississippi – refused to adopt the 13th amendment announcing the slaves had been freed by force of Northern arms • Both States – would pay their war debts • Southern Fire-Eaters (Extremist) were gaining strenght
