  1. I Corinthians 11:3(NKJV) 3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.

  2. The Government of The Church I Corinthians 11:3

  3. Government Of The Church • In our world, structure is a must • Any business that wants to be successful must have structure • Everywhere you look there is order and structure • There is a reason why things are this way…

  4. Government Of The Church • We find order because God is a God of order • “For God is not the author of confusion (disorder) but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints” (I Cor. 14:33) • “Let all things be done decently and in order” (I Cor. 14:40)

  5. Government Of The Church • God has set forth order within the world • “…the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God” (I Cor. 11:3) • We see God set up government so that there might be order upon the earth (Rom. 13:1-7)

  6. Government Of The Church • God set forth order in the home(Eph. 5:22-6:4) • He also set forth order within His church • If we are to be the church of the NT, the one Jesus died for, then we must structure His body the way He commands us • It starts with Christ…

  7. Authority of Christ • We are going to see from scripture that it is in fact Christ who is head of the church • That makes perfect sense because He shed His blood for it • Just as the one who builds a company may name it after himself because of the sacrifice that he/she made

  8. Authority of Christ • Jesus announced the authority He had been given as authority both in heaven and on earth (Matt. 28:18) • “…Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him” (I Pet. 3:21-22)

  9. Authority of Christ • Paul tells us that all we do in word or deed should be done in the name of Jesus (Col. 3:17) • Doing something in the name of Christ means that we are doing it by the authority of Christ • Ex. “Stop in the name of the law!”

  10. Head of the Church • Paul teaches several times in his writing that Jesus is the head of the church • The church is the body of Christ, and therefore He is the head of the body (Eph. 1:22-23) • “And He is the head of the body, the church…” (Col. 1:18)

  11. Head of the Church • Paul later points out that Christ is not only the head of the body (church), but He is the Savior of that body as well (Eph. 5:23-24) • It only makes sense that the one who has the authority is the one who is head over the organization

  12. Head of the Church • Jesus said that He would build “My church” (Matt. 16:18) • That church belongs to Him because it is His body and He died to save it • Therefore it has one head, and that one head is Jesus Christ

  13. Two-headed Church? • Can the church have two heads? • Over and over the Bible teaches that Christ is the head of the church • Yet some, as the Catholic church does, teach that the Pope is the head of the church • Where does this come from?

  14. Two-headed Church? • Catholics point to Matthew 16:15-23 as their source • Jesus said that “you are Peter (rock), and on this rock I will build My church” (v. 18) • Peter (Petros) – piece of rock • Rock (petra) – mass of rock; large stone

  15. Two-headed Church? • “Jesus our Lord, founded but one Church, which He was pleased to build on Peter. Therefore, any church that does not recognize Peter as its foundation stone is not the Church of Christ, and therefore cannot stand, for it is not the work of God” (James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of our Fathers, p. 82)

  16. Two-headed Church? • “For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (Apostle Paul, I Cor. 3:11) • What about the keys of the kingdom given to Peter in Matthew 16:19? • Peter was given the keys to the kingdom, but what do keys do?

  17. Two-headed Church? • Peter unlocked the doors by preaching the gospel on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2 • The pope is also believed to be infallible (incapable of making mistakes or being wrong) • That must have applied to Peter as well

  18. Two-headed Church? • Notice what Jesus said to Peter just a few verses after talking about His church… • “But He turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.’”(Matt. 16:23)

  19. Two-headed Church? • Paul also had to rebuke Peter in Galatians 2:11ff when he “withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed” • This certainly does not describe a man who is “incapable of making mistakes or being wrong”
