  1. Student Activities and IAC Metrics IAC Student Meeting February 2005Michaela Martinmartinma@ornl.gov, 865-574-8688

  2. IAC Metrics IAC Student Meeting – February 2005

  3. FACT OR FICTION? • My IAC is funded primarily by the state where the center resides. • My IAC is funded primarily by manufacturing plants within 150 miles of my school. • My IAC is funded primarily by the U.S. government. IAC Student Meeting – February 2005

  4. FACT: C. My IAC is funded primarily by the U.S. government. The Department of Energy is an Executive branch agency. The President is the boss and he proposes the annual operating budget. Congress may adjust the budget request, mainly to meet the needs of their constituents. IAC Student Meeting – February 2005

  5. PROBABLE OUTCOME OR FICTION? Next year, the government will likely… • increase IAC funding because promoting energy efficiency in industry is a good cause. • continue to fund the IAC if the program generates good results due to our assessment work and student participation (e.g. client implementation of energy and energy cost saving ARs, students graduate to jobs with energy roles). • continue to fund the IAC regardless of the quality of our assessment work and student participation. IAC Student Meeting – February 2005

  6. PROBABLE OUTCOME: Next year, the government will likely… B. continue to fund the IAC if the program generates good results due to our assessment work and student participation (e.g. client implementation of energy and energy cost saving ARs, students graduate to jobs with energy roles). IAC Student Meeting – February 2005

  7. Quotations • “The measure of compassion is more than good intentions, it is good results. Sympathy is not enough.” President George W. Bush, April 2002 • “My budget substantially reduces or eliminates more than 150 government programs that are not getting results, or duplicate current efforts, or do not fulfill essential priorities. The principle here is clear: a taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely, or not at all.” President Bush, 2005 State of the Union Address, February 2005 IAC Student Meeting – February 2005

  8. Quotations • “…are they doing what they're supposed to be doing? Are they performing up to snuff? Is this a legitimate ongoing requirement of the federal government? Are there better ways to provide these services? Are there consolidations in savings that are possible?” Vice-President Dick Cheney, Fox News Interview, February 2005 • “In every program, and in every agency, we are measuring success not by good intentions, or by dollars spent, but rather by results achieved.” President George W. Bush, FY 2006 Budget Message, February 2005 IAC Student Meeting – February 2005

  9. IAC Metrics: Reporting the Good Results IAC Student Meeting – February 2005
