  2. BASIC TELCOMMUNICATIONS When the touch tone keypad layout was first being designed , it was arranged similar to an adding machine and calculators. Western Electric soon discovered that people with experience using adding machines and calculators had memorized the keypads, much like a typist memorizes the typewriter keyboard.

  3. BASIC TELCOMMUNICATIONS This enabled them to enter numbers very rapidly, if you have ever seen an account use an adding machine you realize how quickly they can punch the numbers in. Because they could enter the numbers in so quickly that not enough time was allowed between digits for the transmission of the 100ms tones on a touch tone phone
