  1. Daily TAKS Connection:Plant Adaptations Objective 3 BIO (13): The student knows the significance of plants in the environment. (A): evaluate the significance of structural and physiological adaptations of plants to their environments

  2. Construct a foldable Materials: Foldable handout Scissors Pen Colored pencils/crayons Instructions: Fold the matchbook template along the dashed line Cut along the solid lines Foldable Activity

  3. Foldable activity Label the Cross Section of the Leaf as Follows: T- Stomata (gas exchange) O2 CO2 Q - Cuticle (waxy coating on leaf that prevents water loss). Thick in dry/arid environments. S- Upper Epidermis (lots of chloroplasts are here for the absorption of sunlight to undergo photosynthesis 

  4. Foldable Activity There are four pictures of various plant adaptations on the inside of your foldable. • Circle an adaptation you identify within each picture. • Within each cut square indicate what advantage each adaptation may possess

  5. Adaptation: • Stomata are located on the upper side of the leaf. • Possible Purpose: • Water Plants (allows for gas exchange) Plant Adaptation Notes • Adaptation: • Broad Leaf Surface for more absorption of sunlight • Possible Purpose: • Plants in low light environment

  6. Plant Adaptation Notes Adaption: Spines on Plant Possible Purpose: Plant Protection

  7. Plant Adaptation Notes Adaption: Pneumatophores Possible Purpose: Mangrove plants or plants which live in waterlogged soils. This structure allows for gas oxygen absorption for cellular respiration in plants

  8. Plant Adaptation Notes Adaption: Seed with wing-like structures Possible Purpose: Wind dispersal of seed

  9. Plant Adaptation Notes Adaption: Long tap root Possible Purpose: Roots can go great distances to reach water

  10. Plant Adaptation Notes Adaption: Several small seeds in sweet fruit Possible Purpose: Greater possibility of dispersal and possibility to be eaten by other organisms

  11. Plant Adaptation Sort • Use the cards to match the correct plant adaptation with its biome.
