  1. The Distributive Propertyusing Geometer’s Sketchpad Or What I did on my Summer Vacation.

  2. GEOMETER’S SKETCHPAD:PLANNING A LESSON Topic: The math topic I am addressing is the Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition. Reasons: I chose this topic and these virtual manipulative because my students have difficulty understanding this concept. Also, since I teach multiple levels of Math and the Distributive Property occurs in many situations I felt this lesson would be relevant for most of my students. Learning Objectives: Learning Objectives qTo demonstrate the distributive property through numbers, manipulatives and variables qTo use the distributive property in a variety of situations qTo use real-life situations to expand thinking from concrete to abstract reasoning To answer test questions involving the distributive property (MCAS, SAT

  3. Levels of Vocabulary Knowledge (Modified) Level #1: I never heard it before Level #2: I heard it before but I am not sure what it means Level #3: I know what the word means in at least one situation Level #4: I know multiple meanings of the word and/or meaning of the word in specific situations (Hardware: store, computer)

  4. What is the meaning of Distribute? • To pass out , as in worksheets • Math Definition

  5. What is Property? • Something that belongs to someone. • Math Definition:

  6. When do you use the Distributive Property in Math? Madison Park was painted during the summer. One hallway had three sections. The height of each section was 15 feet. The length of of the three section is 11 feet, 16 feet and 14 feet, respectively. What is the total area of the hallway sections? Solve the problems using two methods. Use the construction paper to model the problem. Discussion Questions:What do you noticed about the answers? Which method do you prefer? Why?

  7. Direction for “ A Painting Dilemma • Open Exploring Algebra CD • Open Sketches • Open #3 Algebraic Expressions • Open Distributive Property • Open “ A Painting dilemma” m

  8. Class assignment • After you have opened “ A Painting Dilemma” follow the directions on your worksheet p.99-100. • Using different measurements write the dimensions,Cari’s solution and Zeeba’s solution on your “ A Painting Dilemma “handout. You can work in teams.

  9. A Painting Dilemma

  10. “Exploring Algebra Geometer SketchpadA Painting Dilemma

  11. Independent Activity • Write an example of situation when you could use the distribute property in “ real life” • Try to represent this situation in the following ways • N: Numerical • A-Algebraic • G-Graphic
