  1. Statusreport CAEP/7 WG1Noise technical ACI World Environmental Standing CommitteeGeneva, March 14, 2005Etienne van Zuijlen

  2. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise TechnicalAim, constitution & rapporteur • Keep noise certificationStandards (ICAO Annex 16, Volume I) up to date and effective; • while ensuring that the certification procedures are as simple and inexpensive as possible • experts from certificating authorities (12), manufacturers (25), airlines (3), and airport operators (1), rapporteurs from USA & The Netherlands

  3. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise Technical tasks & meetings N1 Current technical issues N2 Future of noise certification scheme N3 Aircraft type noise certification database N4 Monitoring Noise techologiy (with WG/3) Meetings: • 2004: 2 meetings (Sweden & Montreal) • Feb. 2005: Joint wg1&wg3 meeting • 2005: 2 meetings scheduled: • Geneva, April ‘05 & Savannah, USA, Oct ‘05)

  4. WG1 task identificationmain topic of 1st meeting 2004 • US: update SAE noise certification Docs: • Tackle in technical issues task group • US: CAEP aircraft noise certification database, NoiseDB (interpolation & dually (Ch2& Ch3) certified B747-100/200’s) • US&EU: work program for rotorcraft • US: domestic supersonic research activity: • recommended practices related to supersonic noise and sonic boom CAEP8 • US&FR: ICAO noise certification workshop

  5. WG1 structure (task groupes)7 task areas distributed over 5 task groups • future noise cert. task group(FTG) • technical issues task group (TITG) • technology task group (TTG) • rotercraft task group(RTG) • supersonic transport task group(SSTG)

  6. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise TechnicalWorkplan & progress in Taskgroups - FTG FTG: Future Noise Certification Scheme (follow up on work of CAEP/6 Modernisation TG) • review purpose of certification • study noise problem around airports • agree on role of current certification scheme in aircraft type design Deliverables: • overall: any changes in current noise certification scheme necessary? • in 2005: consensus on the correlation of certification and operational noise levels, based on conclusions of 10 studied a/p’s

  7. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise Technical FTGcertified vs operational noisecorrelation • Datacollection & methodology chosen: • Take-off & approach data (cf. Annex 16) • Quality of measured SEL’s (a.o. threshold) • 1 dB confidence range (and 0.1dB average) • Certified levels cf. Campell-Hill/NoiseDb • Ranking of measured and certified data • Reporting cf Spearman’s Rank-Order • Compare monitored levels at different distances • 3 studies (9 a/p) performed (US, FR, UK) • ACI/Schiphol data requested (draft paper)

  8. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise Technical FTGcertified vs operational noisecorrelation Considerations from initial ACI-study: • Different certified noise levels for airframe /engine combination, with ranges upto 5dB • Monitored data confidence range <1dB • Linear average taken from certified levels • Flight paths and monitoring points are not in “ideal” Annex 16 shematic locations • Influence of distance unclear yet

  9. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise Technical FTGcertified vs operational noisecorrelation Conclusions from initial ACI-study: • From 3 month’s of data, only limited subset (and influence typical period?) • Only 1 monitoring point/Rwy usefull • High variation in certified noise levels • Rank-Order applied to approach only • Monitoring points at larger distance • Better correlation with fly-over/sideline (!??) • Selection of a/c types of interest usefull • Use of mobile monitoring post & longer time period is considered, after discussion WG1

  10. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise TechnicalWorkplan & progress in Taskgroups - TITG TITG: Technical IssuesTask Group • Positions, rules, guidance on technical noise certification issues; Deliverables:

  11. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise TechnicalWorkplan & progress in Taskgroups - TTG TTG: TechnologyTask Group • advice & information on mid- and longterm noise reduction technology • study relationships between noise & emissions tarde-offs Deliverables:

  12. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise TechnicalWorkplan & progress in Taskgroups - RTG RTG: Rotorcraft Task Group • technical points linked to helicopter noise certification Deliverables:

  13. CAEP/7 wg1 Noise TechnicalWorkplan & progress in Taskgroups - RTG STG: supersonic transport task group • Monitor research into soic boom signatures and acceptabilaty • Develop Noise Certification Standards & Recommended Practices Deliverables:
