  2. Objective • To identify pronouns and their antecedents. • CCSS – 6.L.1

  3. A pronoun cannot be used unless a noun has been used before it. That is because a pronoun takes the place of a noun and refers to it. So, in order for the pronoun to refer to it, the noun has to come before the pronoun. Make Sense?

  4. In addition… The pronoun has to agree with its antecedent in: number – is it singular or plural and gender – is it masculine, feminine, or neutral

  5. The king and queen were proud of their baby girl, and they loved her dearly. To whom does the “they” refer? Is “they” singular or plural and does it match its antecedent? To whom does the “her” refer? Is “her” singular or plural, masculine, feminine, or neutral, and does it match its antecedent?

  6. Remember: clearly The pronoun must refer to its antecedent.

  7. The taxicab and the delivery truck made its way through the busy streets. their The taxicaband delivery truck are plural and must have a plural pronoun.

  8. Sometimes you must repeat a noun or rewrite a sentence to make it avoid confusion. Louisa May Alcott wrote a novel about a young woman. She has three sisters. ? Louisa May Alcott wrote a novel about a young woman. The young woman has three sisters

  9. Be very careful using the word “they” at the beginning of the sentence. “They” is not a clear referent – unless it has a very, very, very clear antecedent. You should rewrite. They have two books by Alcott at the school library. The school library has two books by Alcott.

  10. Ms Johnson spoke to Mary about the science fair. She was enthusiastic. • They have no books about women in chemistry at the library. • Malcolm went to the mall with Jaleel. He needed some new shoes. • Mary bumped into Michelle; she said, “Ouch!”

  11. They don’t allow children under 12 in the museum. • Are they starting a new series on TV? • The dog attacked the cat and it ran away. • LaToya and Connie rode the subway and left her shopping bag behind. • Dinah tripped over Emily and stepped on her sandwich. Glencoe, Writer’s Choice
