  3. What The Rec Center Does • Offers students, faculty, and people in the community a place to train, work out, and become fit. • Group Exercise • Pool Area • Personal Training • Nutrition counseling • Intramural sports

  4. Group Exercise • ABS • Anything Goes • Belly Dance • BOOTCAMP • Cardio BOSU • HIP HOP • INC • Interval BOSU • Pilates • S&E (Strength and Endurance) • Triathlon Class • Water Fitness • Yoga

  5. Personal Training • Provides fitness assessments and training.

  6. Nutrition • Receive a personalized nutrition plan, recipes to last a year, and information on ways to change your lifestyle the healthy (and balanced) way.

  7. Intramural Sports • Flag Football • Basketball • Dodgeball • Volleyball • Bowling • Racquetball • Golf

Laurie Dwyer • Undergraduate degree received from Rowan University with a specialization in Dance. • Graduate degree received from University of West Florida with a specialization in Exercise and Physiology and Nutrition. • Financed by school due to her working at school’s health and wellness center. • Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellness. • Has held title for 10 years.

  9. Responsibilities • Hire, train, supervise personal trainers, group exercise instructors, and management. • Has 65 to 70 students that work under her. • Supervise the Rec Club and Rowan University’s chapter of NIRSA. • Also teaches classes at Rowan University.

  10. Likes and Dislikes • “ I enjoy 98% of my job.” • Likes: able to help people, group exercise, training others and herself, and mentoring students who want to be in the profession. • Dislikes: payroll. • Shows how much Mrs. Dwyer enjoys her career.

  11. Miscellaneous • Has competed in marathons, and body building competitions. • Member of the ECA, which holds the world’s largest fitness conference. Also is a key organization in group exercise. • Both of these , she feels, have helped her understand all areas of exercise and fitness.

  12. Words of Wisdom • Recommends getting masters or graduate degree as soon as you are done your undergraduate work. • Get as many certifications as you can while in school, which will help you be able to contribute to work force immediately. • Health professionals start work early in the morning. • Look at all areas of health and wellness to be able to help people in many different ways.

  13. Why Is The Rec Center Supported? • Rowan University supports Rec Center for the following: • 1) Retention of students. Many find comfort in having a facility like that on campus making them want to stay at the school. • 2) The Rec Center keeps the student population healthier which has long lasting effects.

Clinical Exercise Physiology • Goal is to prepare graduates for careers related to clinical exercise physiology, including preparation to be American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologists (RCEPs). • Education: • Takes around two to four semesters to complete • School options: • Few located in nearby areas • Ex. East Stroudsburg University • Job Oppurtunities: • Various job opportunities available

Health Education • Goal is to train health promotion professionals to design, implement, and evaluate interventions promoting healthy behaviors and lifestyles. • Education: • Takes around three to four semesters to complete • School options: • Wide variety present in nearby states • Ex. Northeastern University, Widener University • Online degree programs available • Job Opportunities: • Various jobs available in many different areas

Masters in Sports and Recreation Management • The approach is multi-disciplinary, requiring an appreciation of management functions such as finance, marketing and human resource management, all applied to the sports industry and also other areas. • Education: • Takes three to four semesters to complete program • School options: • Few opportunities in the area • Ex. Drexel University, California University of Pennsylvania • Online degree programs available • Job options: • Sports development • Professional sports teams • National/international events

American College of Sports Medicine • Largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world, holds more than 20,000 members • Founded in 1954 • Mission Statement: promotes and integrates scientific research, education, and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance physical fitness, performance, health, and quality of life

NSCA • National Strength and Conditioning Association • International non profit educational association founded in 1978 • Provides and serves as valuable resource for it’s members, fitness industry, general public, and media • Mission Statement: Worldwide authority on strength and conditioning, we support and disseminate research based knowledge and its practical application to improve athletic performance and fitness.

Aerobics and Fitness Association of America • AFAA • Largest educator in the fitness field • Founded in 1983, has issued over 250,000 certifications in over 73 countries • Mission statement: To provide comprehensive cognitive and practical education for fitness professionals, supported by internationally recognized standards, grounded in research, reflecting a commitment to quality distance education that upholds safe and effective fitness practices
