This case study explores the integration of AXIS software into the workflows of RJI/KBIA shows, led by a research team including Leah Becerra, Evan Thomas, and Andrew Wamboldt. The study involved training an expert to utilize the software effectively, conducting usability tests with volunteers, and gathering feedback. Despite initial frustrations with intuitive design and documentation, the team identified key strengths in AXIS for creating graphics and templates. The findings highlight the software’s value for smaller newsrooms and present recommendations for improving user experience and workflow.

Areas of Research • Research-Team Training • Training an Expert (Travis) • Group Interview with RJI/KBIA shows • Usability Testing with Volunteers
Cloud Access Works as Advertised • Early Frustrations: • “Instant Ingest” • Confusing top navigation • No comprehensive documentation Anyone with a computer that has a flash enabled browser can use it! BUT The interface is hardly intuitive.
Training an Expert Travis’ role would be to learn the software to the fullest over the course of our research. Along the way he would also implement the software into the shows he works on at RJI.

Group Interview with Does AXIS have value in smaller newsrooms? Global Journalist saw some potential in AXIS for its show, both in existing templates, and in the creation of new ones.
Informing the Show • Existing solutions • Maps • Charts • Over-the-shoulder graphics • Lower thirds • And new ones • Google • Twitter • Skype
Usability Testing Taking what we learned from the previous areas of research the team designed a usability to prove or disprove our thought on the software thus far.
What We Found Testers’ abilities ranged from novice to expert. __________________________ All testers failed the first task and passed the last two. All testers confirmed our pre-testing assumptions. All but one subject completed the whole test under 15 minutes.
