There was no soap, or clean towels, or hot water Many soldiers were injured, so the hospital was very crowded There were no clean clothes, the injured soldiers lay in their dirty uniforms. There wasn’t much good food, often it was old and rotten. The hospital was dirty, and many soldiers died from diseases like cholera and typhus There were no beds so the soldiers had to lie on the floor Unit 4: Why do we remember Florence Nightingale?
