Why did Greeks originally form City- States? • The ancient Greeks originally formed City-States so that their people would have protection and stability from invasion and economical purposes. • The geography also promoted the creation of City-States in that the mountains and the Islands provided a natural segregation of people. • People of different regions and locations did not have as much contact with one another because of those geographical obstacles

Types of Government 4 • Monarchy • Tyranny • Oligarchy • Democrasy
Monarchy • Monarchy is ruled by a single person or a king. The Prince would take throne if the King stepped down or died. If there wasn’t a male successor then the Kings closet military advisors would battle for the throne. The monarchies survived to around 1200 B.C.E. Monarchies were replaced by a system in which a small number of individuals shared power and ruled as a group.
Tyranny • A Tyranny functions by a individual who has seized control of the government illegally. • Tranny started in 600s B.C.E. and ended in 510 B.C.E. • The last major tyrant was a person named Hippias.
Oligarchy • The Oligarchy is in the hands of a few leaders. Political power was shared by aristocrats, who had wealth from families, and wealthy middle class. They had luxurious lives and enforced military support. Full political rights were lacked. Between 1100 and 800 B.C.E. the Oligarchy started to begin, but it was eventually overthrown by the 400’s and only one city-state was ruled by an Oligarchy, it was Sparta.
Democracy • This government function by allowing people to vote. The men of Athens ran the government. They have councils that happen often. This democracy began in 500 B.C.E. so people were in charge of running the state. The members of the council were chosen by lottery.
