  2. Today: we practice layering old & new ideas(reiteration meets new thought)

  3. Militaristic Japan • In order to expand, Japan needs natural resources to keep industries running • They don’t have any oil or coal…so they attack Manchuria

  4. Manchuria = puppet state • Manchuria = puppet state under Japan • 1937: full scale attack on China • We didn’t send military, but we offered help to China with our Flying Tigers on a volunteer basis

  5. Seeds of War • 1938 Japan controls China • Plans to control all of E. Asia (but most of them are European nations) • So….they become friends with Nazi GermanyFascist Italy

  6. Meanwhile…back in the U.S. We want to stay out of war…2 options: • Peace • Isolationism “We have a duty to stick up to dictators… but I’m still focused on Depression recovery so…let’s just chill for now.”

  7. Winston Churchill • 1940 • Prime Minister – G.B • Asks U.S. for help against Nazi Germany • They do not have cash to buy goods

  8. The End of Isolationism REMEMBER? Lend-Lease Act • Gives President the power to lend/lease supplies to a country whose defense was needed to protect the U.S. SOOO……. We send ships, guns & supplies to Britain

  9. Oops! • German subs start sinking our ships • We are now extremely vulnerable

  10. …oops… • September 1940 • Japan becomes an ally of Germany & Italy, & continues to spread into Asia 1941 • FDR stops trade with Japan • Neither side will compromise • Japan wants to control Asia without U.S. interference so…..

  11. PEARL HARBOR • December 7th, 1941 • Japan attacks U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor • 19 ships destroyed • 2,400 Americans die http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e6h9h7ky0E

  12. We declare war on Japan • December 8th1941 (the next day) • Since we went to war with Japan, we went to war with their allies (Germany & Italy)
