  6. What is a Language Objective? A Language Objective: identifies what language students should know and be able to use while using English to accomplish a task. supports student language development often focusing on vocabulary, functional language, questioning, articulating predictions or hypotheses, reading, writing, & etc. is tied to the goals and activities of the lesson aligned to a content objective. should be stated simply, orally, and in writing.

  7. When we think of language… • We think about the functions of language: How will the language be used? Will the students ask questions, compare and contrast, describe, explain, etc.? • We think about some of theformsof language students will use when using a particular type of function; content vocabulary, grammatical structures, etc.?

  8. Language Functions Susana Dutro, Aiming High, January 2006 Language functions are: The tasks or purposes and uses of language. The cognitive tasks that drive us to connect thought and language. Used to express the cognition described in content standards.

  9. Language Forms Sometimes known as Patterns and Structures, they: refer to grammatical features. are the building blocks for discourse, reading and writing, complex language and cognitive processes. should be determined by the language function (the task) and students’ level of proficiency.

(form / language target) Students will describe a character’s emotions using precise adjectives. Students will express an opinion in a topic sentence for a persuasive paragraph using strong verbs.   13. Activity- Circle the Language Functions and Underline the Forms. Orally express an opinion using persuasive language (should, must, need, etc.) in complete sentences. Use compound sentences to compare and contrast A and B. Predict the next three items in the pattern using future tense verbs. Write a description of the physical characteristics using sensory adjectives. Develop a hypothesis using the conditional tense and the structure, “If…, then….”
