  1. Welcome to Mr. Van Hook’s Geometry Class It is going to be a great year!

  2. Things You Need to Know About Me • I love my job • I have been married for five years • I have an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University • I hold a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education from U of H • This is my 6thyear teaching math

  3. How I am as a Teacher • If you ask questions, I will be your favorite teacher. • Dr. Li: “Math is not a question of ability, it is a question of effort” • You have my respect and trust until you no longer deserve it.

  4. Contact and Website • You can always email me at: james.vanhook@springbranchisd.com • Make sure you check my website for tons of information like: • Assignments posted • Notes posted • Bonuses on Quizzes and Tests • Do not ask me what we did or what you are missing. It will all be on my webpage

  5. Beginning of Class • Students are expected to be in class when the bell rings • Students arriving after the conclusion of the bell tone will be marked tardy • During “heads up”, you may be moving around the room to take care of pre-class business (sharpen pencils, grab a tissue, grab a book)

  6. A Normal Day • 5 Minutes of “Heads Up” • 5 Minutes of checking over homework independently or with a partner. • 5 Minutes to ask me any questions about homework, Heads Up, or End of Class Checks • 15 to 25 Minutes of a teacher led lesson • 10 minutes of independent or partner work • 5 minutes for end of class check

  7. “HEADS UP” • Can be one to three warm up problems. • Must be completed on your chart • Purpose is to review homework, or to activate your prior learning. • Lasts for five minutes. • You must work on your own during this time with minimal talking.

  8. After Heads Up…. • After the five minute heads up session, you will have a chance to put finishing touches on homework for five minutes • Conversations must be about math, but you are allowed to work on “heads up” problems, homework problems, or end of class checks • This is for independent or collaborative work and discussion, not copying homework. • I will be moving around the room to answer individual questions

  9. After 5 minute touch up… • …is your chance to ask the teacher any questions you might have. • During this five minutes I will go over any problem you wish. • It can be from homework, heads up, or EOCC. • At the conclusion of this five minutes you will hand in your homework

  10. For 15 to 25 minutes • After you have asked questions and handed in your homework, it is time for us to go over the new material for the day. • This is simply where you are paying attention and I am teaching the whole class.

  11. Once I am done teaching… • You are working independently or with a nearby partner • The purpose is to get started on your homework • You are allowed to discuss and help each other during this time. • I will be moving around the room to answer individual questions

  12. EOCC • Stands for End of Class Check • Happens the last five minutes of class • This is one problem that is meant to give you the big idea you should know for the day. • There is no talking during the EOCC. • Must be completed on your chart.

  13. Charts • Everyday must have something written down for Date, Heads Up, and End of Class Check • You must keep track of your chart for two weeks • When it is full on the second Friday, it will be handed in for a quiz grade.

  14. Grading Distributions • 60% of your grade will be determined by tests • 15% of your grade will be determined by homework • 25% of your grade will be determined by quizzes

  15. My Rules • Everyone learns math in different ways and at different paces, so respect and help each other. • Do not talk during heads up and EOCC, this is a time for individual work. • Use independent and collaborative time effectively to maximize class time where I can offer assistance. • Use of cell phones and electronic devices is prohibited. • No food or drink except bottled water
