  1. Family Crosstrainers Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. (Deuteronomy 6:6-7)

  3. Sins Have Consequences • Why do we sin? What is the primary motivation? • We are often selfish in our behavior. • The consequences of our sins can be direct, indirect, short-term and long-term. • How do you show your kids the consequences of their actions?

  4. David’s Selfish Sin

  5. HOWEVER • David’s actions did not go unnoticed • David’s selfish act sets off a spiral of consequences that quickly escalates

  6. Consequences of David’s Sin • Amnon, David’s son, rapes his half-sister, David’s daughter, Tamar • David’s sin allowed for Amnon to feel he could fulfill whatever passion he had

  7. Consequences of David’s Sin • Absalom, David’s son and Tamar’s brother, murders Amnon out of vigilante justice

  8. Consequences of David’s Sin • Murder of Uriah • Bathsheba’s baby dies in infancy • Amnon rapes Tamar • Absalom murders Amnon – vigilante justice • Absalom conspires for the throne

  9. 2 Samuel 15:1-6, 17:7-12, 18:9-16 After this, Absalom got himself a chariot, horses, and 50 men to run before him. 2 He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for settlement, Absalom called out to him and asked, "What city are you from?" If he replied, "Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel," 3 Absalom said to him, "Look, your claims are good and right, but the king does not have anyone to listen to you.”

  10. 2 Samuel 15:1-6, 17:7-12, 18:9-16 4 He added, "If only someone would appoint me judge in the land. Then anyone who had a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would make sure he received justice." 5 When a person approached to bow down to him, Absalom reached out his hand, took hold of him, and kissed him. 6 Absalom did this to all the Israelites who came to the king for a settlement. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

  11. 2 Samuel 15:1-6, 17:7-12, 18:9-16 Hushai replied to Absalom, "The advice Ahithophel has given this time is not good." 8 Hushai continued, "You know your father and his men. They are warriors and are desperate like a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Your father is an experienced soldier who won't spend the night with the people. 9 He's probably already hiding in one of the caves or some other place. If some of our troops fall first, someone is sure to hear and say, 'There's been a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’

  12. 2 Samuel 15:1-6, 17:7-12, 18:9-16 10 Then, even a brave man with the heart of a lion will melt because all Israel knows that your father and the valiant men with him are warriors. 11 Instead, I advise that all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba-- as numerous as the sand by the sea-- be gathered to you and that you personally go into battle. 12 Then we will attack David wherever we find him, and we will descend on him like dew on the ground. Not even one will be left of all the men with him.

  13. 2 Samuel 15:1-6, 17:7-12, 18:9-16 Absalom was riding on his mule when he happened to meet David's soldiers. When the mule went under the tangled branches of a large oak tree, Absalom's head was caught fast in the tree. The mule under him kept going, so he was suspended in midair. 10 One of the men saw him and informed Joab. He said, "I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree!"

  14. 2 Samuel 15:1-6, 17:7-12, 18:9-16 11 "You just saw him!" Joab exclaimed. "Why didn't you strike him to the ground right there? I would have given you 10 silver pieces and a belt!”

  15. 2 Samuel 15:1-6, 17:7-12, 18:9-16 12 The man replied to Joab, "Even if I had the weight of 1,000 pieces of silver in my hand, I would not raise my hand against the king's son. For we heard the king command you, Abishai, and Ittai, 'Protect the young man Absalom for me.' 13 If I had jeopardized my own life-- and nothing is hidden from the king-- you would have abandoned me."

  16. 2 Samuel 15:1-6, 17:7-12, 18:9-16 14 Joab said, "I'm not going to waste time with you!" He then took three spears in his hand and thrust them into Absalom's heart while he was still alive in the oak tree, 15 and 10 young men who were Joab's armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him, and killed him. 16 Afterward, Joab blew the ram's horn, and the troops broke off their pursuit of Israel because Joab restrained them.

  17. Consequences of David’s Sin • Murder of Uriah • Bathsheba’s baby dies in infancy • Amnon rapes Tamar • Absalom murders Amnon – vigilante justice • Absalom conspires for the throne • Absalom is killed • Jesus Christ dies on the cross for the forgiveness of sins – yours, mine, everyone

  18. The Ultimate Consequence of Sin • The ultimate consequence of sin is Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection won for us forgiveness, life, and victory over our consequences.
