Slicing is a crucial technique in interface design that helps create different visual appearances for interactive elements within your wireframe. This process improves usability by providing distinct states—UP, DOWN, and OVER—for buttons. The UP state represents unused buttons upon website entry, the DOWN state reflects the button when clicked, and the OVER state indicates interaction when a user hovers over it. Utilizing tools like Adobe Photoshop, designers can create layered designs for each button state, ensuring clarity and responsiveness across user interactions.

Slicing is a tool used to divide sections incorporated in your wire frame • Aids in designing the useable interface • Creates the differing appearances amongst the different states
UP State: the state in which interactive buttons are being unused; as they appear when a website is entered
DOWN State: the changed state of interactive buttons when the user has clicked on it; appearance should differ from the other states to ensure the user is aware they have achieved something
OVER State: the changed state of interactive buttons when the user has skimmed over it; appearance should differ from the other states to ensure the user is aware they have achieved something
Creating these different states is done in Adobe Photoshop • Layers of each different interactive button must be created in each individual state and saved as such • For instance: 5 navigation buttons=15 states; 5 UP, 5 OVER, 5 DOWN, which should be saved accordingly
