  1. Modelling Intelligent Interaction- Logic in the Humanities, Social and Computational Sciences (LogICCC) An ESF EUROCORES (EUROpean COllaborative RESearch) programmme Eva Hoogland Eurocores Coordinator for the Cognitive Sciences MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  2. Part one: About the European Science Foundation (ESF) MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  3. About ESF 79 Member Organisations (in 30 countries, beyond the European Union): • Research funding organisations • Research performing organisations • Academies MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  4. About ESF • Established 1974 • Independent, non-governmental • Offices in Strasbourg and Brussels • Budget: 45M€ • Networking Budget: 1-3B€ • Covering all researchdomains MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  5. Mission To provide a common platform for our Member Organisations in order to: • Advance European research • Explore new directions for research at the European level Through our activities, we serve the needs of the European research community in a global context. MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  6. Part two: About EUROCORES (European Collaborative Research Programmes) MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  7. EUROCORES Vision fragmented research strengths new, integrated knowledge • Responsive mode • Bottom-up, researcher-led identification of themes • Consultation with funders • Combines researcher’s needs and strategic priorities Funding agencies join forces to support cutting edge trans-disciplinary, trans-national collaborative research; multi-perspective on complex / broad questions Create critical mass in a global context: New approaches, new collaborations, new knowledge MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  8. EUROCORES - Main Features • Multi-national research projects (research groups from at least 3 different participating countries ) • International competition • Funding remains national • ESF ensures quality control • Provides flexible framework for collaboration of national funding agencies • Investigator driven A Eurocores programme typically involves • 10-20 participating countries (LogICCC: 16) • a research budget of ca. 5 M€ (LogICCC: 7M€) • a running time of 3 years MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  9. EUROCORES - Where are we now? Ca. 200 programme proposals submitted Ca. 40 programmes selected Ca. 8.000 applications of Collaborative Research teams (CRPs) Ca. 200 M€ funding Ca. 70 funding organisations from ca. 35 countries, within and outside Europe MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  10. Part three: About LogICCC MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  11. LogICCC – Modelling Intelligent Interaction The EUROCORES programme “LogICCC – Modelling Intelligent Interaction. Logic in the Humanities, Social and Computational Sciences” aims at a deeper understanding of intelligent interaction by letting logic in its modern guise act as a catalyst and a ’match maker’ between the different relevant disciplines. Running time: 2008 - 2011 www.esf.org/logic MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010

  12. LogICCC – Collaborative Research projects (CRPs) - 1 • Computational Foundations of Social Choice (CFSC) Project Leader: Felix Brandt, University of Munich • Dialogical Foundations of Semantics (DiFoS) Project Leader: Peter Schroeder-Heister, UniversitätTübingen • Games for Analysis and Synthesis of Interactive Computational Systems (GASICS) Project Leader: Jean-François Raskin, Université Libre de Bruxelles • The Logic of Causal and Probabilistic Reasoning in Uncertain Environments (LcpR) Project Leader: GernotKleiter, University of Salzburg MIDiSoVa, 26-28 March 2010
