  1. Hero Essay A Definition Paper

  2. Introduction • Begin with an attention-getter or hook • Use a story, a description, a startling statement– anything that will engage your reader • Follow with your definition of a hero • Your definition should be unique and personal. If someone asked you “What is a hero?” what would you say? • Name your hero and the qualities that make him/her heroic • Choose a person you believe to be heroic. Name that person and explain the qualities that define him/her as a hero. Then, transition to your first body paragraph.

  3. Body Paragraphs • Include at least 3 body paragraphs • Each paragraph will begin with a topic sentence • Next include an example from any of our stories from your quote sheet • Create an original example using your chosen person • Transition to the next trait

  4. Please Note • The topic sentence will be a general sentence about your chosen heroic trait • Imbed your quoted example from the stories, document correctly, and follow with your own explanation • Story choice can be different for each paragraph • Your original example will show that same trait as applied to your chosen topic

  5. Body Paragraph Example A hero understands that in order to achieve his goals, he must rely on himself. In Coolidge’s story, “Sigurd, the Dragon Slayer,” Sigurd knows that “from this time on nobody is master to me” (1054) when he is about to begin his quest. He takes charge of his life and directs the journey. Martin Luther King knew that many would disagree with his message, but he persisted in making his thoughts on equality public to the world even when it meant personal isolation. In addition to self-reliance, a hero must also be honorable.

  6. Create at Least 3 Body Paragraphs Similar to the Example

  7. Conclusion • Restate your thesis • Go back to the first paragraph and find your thesis. Re-word it and write it again for emphasis • Conclude with a universal statement about heroism

  8. Final Check List • Strong introduction with attention-getter and thesis • 3 documented quotes from our stories • 3 original examples about your person • Strong conclusion • 3rd person point of view throughout • No “I” or “You” • Variety of sentence patterns • MLA Format • Turnitin.com and copy for class by deadline
