  2. Background Information • This cartoon was created by Nate Beeler, Washington Examiner, on August 24, 2011. It was published by The Santa Cruz Comic News, which is a journal that includes hundreds of cartoons by well-known artists.

  3. Purpose • The cartoonist uses irony to convey how ‘America’s Great Values’ are made in China. He hints on our dependence for China on various goods, including a statue Of Martin Luther King Junior.

  4. Audience • The intended audience includes the citizens of the United States, to be made aware of our great reliance for China.

  5. Focal Point • While the statue is the largest part of the cartoon, our eyes are drawn to the ‘Made In China’ plate, that is made of gold. • How does the artist use color to prove that?

  6. Ethos • The ethical appeal is eminent in this cartoon. Whether it is the signature and logo in the top left corner, or the publication in the Santa Cruz Comic News.

  7. Logos • The logical appeal is created by the question, how does America have great values if it is all made in China? We see that our country depends on this nation so great, it reflects our values.

  8. Pathos • There’s not much emotional appeal in this cartoon, but it causes citizens to question the intentions of America and their own values of this great country and really, just how great it is.

  9. What If? • The picture would change it’s purpose to the complete opposite. Instead of the ironic meaning of America’s values, it would be uplifting to our country and culture. And you could probably get away with hanging it in your bathroom if you wanted.
