Explore the Windows 8 Start Screen • When you turn on your computer, the Windows 8 operating system loads and the Windows 8 Start screen displays on your monitor. • The Windows 8 Start screen contains tiles you can use to open programs or access features within Windows 8. • Display all of the applications installed on your computer by right-clicking a blank area of the Start screen and then clicking the All apps icon that displays in the lower right corner of the screen. • Windows 8 includes a Charm bar containing five buttons you can use to perform tasks such as searching apps, sharing apps, and shutting down the computer. Display the Charm bar by hovering the mouse over the upper or lower right corner of the screen.

Explore the Windows 8 Desktop • The Windows 8 desktop can be compared to the top of a desk in an office. • A person places necessary tools—such as pencils, pens, paper, files, or a calculator—on his or her desktop to perform functions. • Similarly, the Windows 8 desktop contains tools for operating the computer. These tools are logically grouped and placed in dialog boxes or windows that can be accessed using the icons located on the desktop. • The desktop is the most common screen in Windows 8 and is the screen in which most applications and tools will open and run.

Explore the Windows 8 Desktop…continued • You can change the appearance of Windows 8 with options that display when you right-click a blank area of the desktop. • Click the Personalize option at the shortcut menu if you want to change the Windows theme, desktop background, color, sounds, or screen saver. • You can also change how the desktop icons and mouse pointers display. • Click the Screen resolution option at the shortcut menu if you want to change the screen resolution, the monitor orientation, or the size of text or other items. • The Screen Resolution window also contains controls for setting up multiple displays.

  23. Explore the Charm Bar To search for an application: • Position the mouse pointer in the upper right corner of the desktop to display the Charm bar. • Click the Search button on the Charm bar. • Type desired text in the search text box. • Press Enter. search text box on Charm bar

Explore the Charm Bar…continued • The Charm bar contains the Devices button, which you can use to manage devices plugged into your computer. • Click the Devices button on the Charm bar and the Devices panel displays at the right side of the screen. Devices plugged into your computer display as a list in the Devices panel. • Click a device in the Devices list to display options for a particular device. Devices that are commonly listed in the Devices panel are monitors, projectors, and other peripheral devices that may be plugged into your computer.
