  6. Responsibilities • Analyzing an incident to determine the presence of hazardous substances • Hands-on experience with relevant sources of information that addresses hazardous substance releases 1e

  7. Responsibilities • Implementing continuing response actions consistent with the local emergency response plan • Understanding the potential hazards of a hazardous release site 1f

  8. Responsibilities • The information provided in NFPA’s standard number 472 1g

  9. Training - first responders at the awareness level must: • Understand what hazardous substances are, and their associated risks 2a

  10. Training - first responders at the awareness level must: • Understand the potential outcomes associated with an emergency created when hazardous substances are present 2b

  11. Training - first responders at the awareness level must: • Be able to recognize the presence of hazardous substances in an emergency • Be able to identify the hazardous substances, if possible 2c

  12. Training - first responders at the awareness level must: • Understand the role of the first responder according to the DOT’s Emergency Response Guidebook • Be able to realize the need for additional resources, and to make appropriate notifications 2d

  13. Types of hazards a first responder may encounter • Chemical exposure • Fire and explosion • Oxygen deficiency • Ionizing radiation 3a

  14. Types of hazards a first responder may encounter • Biological hazards • Safety hazards • Electrical hazards • Heat stress 3b

  15. Types of hazards a first responder may encounter • Cold exposure • Noise • Confined space entry hazards 3c

  16. Routes for chemical exposure • The majority of toxic substances enter the body through breathing • Other means include absorption, ingestion, and injection 4a

  17. Routes for chemical exposure • Chemical exposures are divided into two groups: • Acute • Chronic 4b

  18. Routes for chemical exposure • Symptoms from acute exposures occur during or shortly after exposure to a high concentration • Symptoms from chronic exposures occur over longer periods of time after exposures to low concentrations 4c
