  2. “Beware of the leaven…” (Matt 16:11) EVIL INFLUENCE SPREADING LEAVEN : the element of fermentation added to dough causing bread to rise – “yeast”

  3. OLD LEAVEN • TEACHING of Pharisees, Sadducees, Herod –Herodians (Matt. 16:5-12, Mk.8:15) • Tradition of elders above actual law (Matt.15:1-9) • Denied Resurrection – Spirit, Angels (Acts 23:8) • Politically Motivated –Destroy Jesus (Mk. 3:6, Matt. 22:15-21)

  4. OLD LEAVEN • HYPOCRISYof Pharisees(Lk. 12:1) • Demand clean hands before eating – but inside full of extortion, wickedness and excess(Lk. 11:39, Matt. 23:25-26) • Say and Do Not(Matt. 23:3) • Appear Righteously outside – inside full of hypocrisy and iniquity(Matt. 23:28)

OLD LEAVEN • Sin of having father’s wife was evil enough- not even among the Gentiles (v.1) • TOLERATIONOF SIN(I Cor. 5:1-8) • Glorying (Puffed up) in superior knowledge- rival of Paul; not mourning over spiritual death (v.2, 4:6, 18) • Tolerating it and providing cover for it has an evil leavening effect besides sin itself: leaven of “malice” and “wickedness” (v.8) • New lump by unleavened “Sincerity” – tested by light and “Truth” putting it into practice (v.8, 2 Cor. 1:12, 2:17)

  6. OLD LEAVEN • MIXING OTHER BELIEFSWITH GOSPEL(Gal. 5:7-9, 1:7-8) • Preaching circumcision and preaching cross not compatible (Gal. 5:11) • Paul’s attitude toward leavening persuaders: Castration not circumcision (Gal. 5:12)

LEAVEN: Preach the word… For the time will come when they will not endure the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts and will turn away their ears from the truth and turn aside unto fables. But be thou sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of the evangelist…” 2 Tim. 4:2-5 TOLERATION OFERROR-PROVIDING COVER “Preachers are not given the responsibility to watch – just elders Heb. 13:17, I Pet. 5:2 I Cor. 16:13

  8. LEAVEN: TOLERATION OF ERROR-PROVIDING COVER Romans 14 allows for fellowshipping those with contradictory beliefs regarding matters of moral and doctrinal import – MDR??? One must go to false teacher first before exposing the error (Matt. 18:15) Sins against “Me” – personal sins (Matt. 18:21) Matters Indifferent with God – Eating Meats Rom. 14:6, I Cor. 8:8

LEAVEN: TOLERATION OF ERROR-PROVIDING COVER Ye therefore, beloved, knowing these things beforehand, beware lest, being carried away with the error of the wicked, ye fall from your own stedfastness. (2 Pet. 3:17, 4, 16) That issue is not a problem here…If you know the truth, you do not have to be conversant with what another teaches

LEAVEN: Now I beseech you, brethren, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment (I Cor. 1:10) TOLERATION OF ERROR-PROVIDING COVER “There can be no ‘brotherhood norm’…else give up autonomy in favor of sectarianism” Unanimity = forming sectarian creed???

LEAVEN: HYPOCRISY Romans 14 allows for the one who practices the doctrine: “…and let not him that eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him” (Romans 14:3) Will regard teacher of false doctrine worthy of fellowship if sincere, but will not accept couple living in adultery who sincerely apply false doctrine

Six days of creation – evening-morning, one day (Gen. 1:5,31; Exodus 20:9-11) LEAVEN: MIXING OTHER BELIEFS WITH GOSPEL Jesus: man created- from beginning of creation (Mark 10:6) Adam created sixth day died 930 years later; if day is not literal day then years make no sense (Gen. 5:5, 1:14). Considering theories of earth being millions of years old as fact - in turn interpreting Scripture accordingly – “Day –Age Theory”

LEAVEN: “Let Not Man Put Asunder” – One Reason: Fornication (Matt. 19:3,6, 9) MIXING OTHER BELIEFS WITH GOSPEL Peter’s Leaving Wife Did Not Involve Divorce (Luke 18:28-29, I Cor. 9:5) “But Should She Depart, Let Her Remain Unmarried…” – Why? ADULTERY (I Cor. 7: 10-11, Matt. 19:9) Only ONE Reason for Divorce and Remarriage – But MANY Reasons for Divorce – For the Kingdom’s Sake: Drug Running, Physical Abuse, etc. “or be RECONCILED (KATALLASSO): Always used in N.T. indicating action of ONE- SIDED HOSTILITY (2 Cor. 5:20) Context of WHY DEPARTING – Unscriptural Marriage (I Cor. 7:12-14)

  14. “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved…” (Mk. 16:16) LEAVEN: Placing Traditions Above Truth “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins…” (Acts 2:38) Just accept Jesus into your heart as your personal Savior, and you will be saved right now! “…Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name” (Acts 22:16)

  15. BLESSINGS FROM GOOD LEAVENING INFLUENCE Keeps traditions of men and doctrinal error from taking hold- NOT FOR AN HOUR! (Gal. 2:5) . PREACH THE WORD instead of following Man’s agenda will keep us BALANCED (2 Tim. 4:2). We will effectively fight the war on error (Rom. 16:17, 2 Jn. 11). Will not put head in sand and avoid matters, but will come to the light to see if they are of God (Jn. 3:21).

  16. Toleration of error Hypocrisy Mixing various beliefs with Gospel Placing traditions of men above truth of Gospel SUBMIT TO TRUTH In Faith (Rom. 10:17) By Confessing with your mouth Jesus as Lord (Rom. 10:9-10) By Repenting and being Baptized for the remission of your sins (Act 2:38) PUT AWAY OLD LEAVEN Let Word Of Kingdom start having a good leavening influence in your life !
