  1. Opening Remarks • From the very beginning, man as been prone to blame others for his own misconduct. Genesis 3:8-13; I Samuel 15:13-15. • Now, more than ever, people in society are being conditioned not to accept personal responsibility for their own actions, or inaction.

  2. Reasons for Refusing to Accept Personal Responsibility. • The Calvinistic Doctrine of Original Sin. • The Calvinistic Doctrine of Predestination and Foreordination. • The Increase of Atheism. • The Continued teaching of Humanism. • The growth of “Big Government” which makes the “system” responsible for one’s success or failure. • Our Legal System which encourages accident victims to sue others for accidents caused by their own carelessness!

  3. “Stubborn Facts” we must Accept: • Man, by design and creation, is a responsible being. Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 8:3-5. • Consequently, we will be held accountable for our own actions, Rom. 14:12; 2 Cor. 5:10. • Human accountability, and therefore human responsibility, demand that we give serious consideration to our own responsibilities in the various relationships of life – Religious, Domestic, Civil, Social, Economic. • Lesson Title: Our Responsibility to Worship

  4. Facts Assumed by the Lesson Title: • That we understand that God is the proper Object of Worship! John 4:24; Matthew 4:8-10; Revelation 22:8-9. • That We understand that God wants us to Worship Him! John 4:23-24. • That We understand the worship is an Every Christian Responsibility! Hebrews 10:25.

  5. Attitude Toward Worship • Attitude Defined: “A way of thinking, acting, or feeling; feeling, manner, or behavior of a person toward a situation or cause,” World Book Dict. • By “Attitude, we refer to a person’s disposition, outlook, or approach to the issue being considered. • Great Compliment: “He/or she has a good attitude.” • Attitude is of upmost importance! Proverbs 23:7

What Ought to be the Christian’s Attitude Toward Worship? • An attitude of gladness, Psalm 122:1-2. • An attitude of reverence, Hebrews 12:28; Habakkuk 2:20. • An attitude of Humility, Matthew 18:3-4; Luke 18:13. • An attitude of Submission to the will of God, Matthew 26:39. • An attitude of Discernment, I Cor. 11:28-30. • An attitude of forgiveness, Luke 23:34; Matthew 5:23-24. • A Prayerful Attitude, James 5:16; I Peter 3:12.

  7. The Christian’s Responsibility to Worship: • The Responsibility to worship the Proper Object or Being, Matthew 4:10; John 4:23-24; Revelation 22:9; Romans 1:25. • The Responsibility to worship in keeping with heaven’s directions. John 4:24; John 17:17; Isaiah 55:8-9. • Fact: Not everything that is called “worship” is acceptable before God!

  8. Some Examples of Unacceptable Worship: • Mock Worship (sincerity lacking). Mark 15:17-20. • Vain Worship (Truth is lacking), Matthew 15:7-9. • Will Worship (desire to please self), Colossians 2:18-23. • Ignorant Worship, Acts 17:23.

  9. Acceptable Worship is Not Intended: • To Entertain, 2 Timothy 4:3-4; I Corinthians 11:20. • To Display one’s talent in teaching, singing, and praying, Romans 12:3. • To Feed the human Ego, Galatians 2:20. • To Feed the human body, I Corinthians 11:22,34.

  10. Acceptable Worship Is Designed to: • Glorify God, I Corinthians 10:31; Ephesians 3:21. • Remember Jesus, Luke 22:19; I Corinthians 11:24. • Edify, Comfort, and Admonish others, I Corinthians 14:26,31; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16. • Prepare one for the Environment of heaven, Revelation 4:8-11; 5:8-13.

  11. Proper Preparation for Worship Could Include: • Lesson Preparation to both teach and learn, 2 Peter 3:18. • Getting Sufficient Rest in order to be alert, John 4:24. • Laying our proper clothing beforehand so as to be early, Colossians 3:23. • Correcting sins committed against others, Matthew 5:23-24. • Reflecting upon God’s holiness, Isaiah 6:1-5. • Reflecting upon God’s majesty so as to submit to His authority in all things, Habakkuk 2:20.

  12. Important Fact: • In view of the Lofty Purpose of worship, One Must strive for Regularity in Worship! • Acts 2:42; Hebrews 10:25. • One who prefers to be elsewhere when the saints are in worship has reason to question the depth of his devotion and the height of his love! John 14:23; I John 5:3.

  13. In View of the Lofty Purpose of Worship, Worship Must Take Precedence: • Over Recreation, Luke 8:14. • Over Family outings, Matthew 10:37. • Over unnecessary work, I Timothy 6:10. • Over minor aches and pains which are not health-threatening, Galatians 6:9. • Over petty grievances because of being offended over trivial matters, Matthew 6:33; Ephesians 4:14.

  14. Conclusion: • Personal Responsibility is Personal! No one can take your place in worship! • Think of the exhilaration, the joy, of being in heaven, with the redeemed of all ages, singing praises to God! • In contrast, think of the misery to be endured by those who will be cast into that “furnace of fire!” • Have You made preparation for heaven?
