English 10 - 1/31/11 • What is the big idea of the book? • What did the arts graduate say to the engineering graduate? • Paedophobia – fear of dolls. • Goals – Discuss the big idea from “Absolutely True…” Talk about plans for the paper/ powerpoint/inspiration. • Homework – Pick a theme and gather at least seven quotes. Put on a word document.

What are the social costs of being different? • What is the worst part of hunting elephants? • Phobophobia – dread of fear. • Goals – Discuss the big idea from “Absolutely True…” Begin work on the “Big Idea” project. Sign up to let me know your Big Idea and how you want to present it. Begin work on your project. • Homework – Check to see if there are other quotes that would fit your big idea better than the ones you chose last night.

  3. English 10 - 2/2/11 • Why is it important that Arnold meet new people and make new friends? Why is it important that he reconcile with Rowdy in the end? • What is large gray and wears glass slippers? • Gamomania – a form of insanity characterized by odd or extravagant proposals of marriage. • Goals – Work on organizing quotes for the Big Idea project. Clarify ideas about the different aspects of the big idea • Homework – Write about your big idea again. Try to explain in more detail your opinions about the issue. Think of this as your intro paragraph where your are filling out your general ideas.

How does he find his joy when he gets depressed? • Why do elephants have trunks? • Ergasiophobia – fear of work. • Goals – Learn how to use a quote in a paper or PowerPoint. Use quotes to turn your general ideas into specific observations about life. • Homework – Make one comment on a quote to show you know how to do it properly.

  5. English 10 - 2/4/11 • How does Arnold go from zero to hero? How does he deal with being both Junior and Arnold? • What did Mrs. Bullet say to Mr. Bullet? • Formication – A feeling that ants are crawling all over one’s skin. • Goals – Create body paragraphs that contain quotes that add specific examples to your view about the big idea. • Homework – None.
