Strategic Vision • Establish and nurture sustainable skill base • Engage/advise internal and external stakeholders • Build (and lead some) collaborations and partnerships • Master and deliver modern technology base • Undertake advanced facility design studies • Pursue generic advantages • Exploit Knowledge Exchange opportunities

  4. ASTeC Programmes • Supported both through FDOD and SPO • Specific programmes, including Design Studies • Underpinning R&D, including technology and novel science • Matrixed staffing from 5 Groups • Oversight by ASTAB plus specific project apparatus • Successful STFC In-house Review in 2007

CEO In-House Research Review • Published in 2008 • Overwhelmingly positive: • “very high quality” research • internationally “competitive” and in some cases “leading” • centre of excellence goal “achieved” • collaborations praised • Comments: • strategic decision process to be strengthened • CERN collaboration to be strengthened • Further joint appointments and secondments to be promoted

ASTeC Programme Resource Design Studies • PP - LC 1000k 10 FTE • PP – NF800k 6 FTE • Neutron Facility 200K 4 FTE • Light Source - 12 FTE Underpinning R&D • ALICE 1000k 13 FTE • SRF 500k 5 FTE • Guns 500k 2 FTE • HPPA and Targetry 900k 6 FTE • Novel accelerators 1400k 10 FTE • Technology Base500k5 FTE

Linear Collider • SPO funded activity • Major UK role in ILC design studies interrupted by serious funding agency issues in UK and USA • Project future very uncertain, especially with STFC • LC programme survives at 25% level (mainly staff) • CERN orientation to be emphasised • Scope for new (low level) activities • Note substantial HEI base

  8. Neutrino Factory • SPO part funded activity • Clear international leadership • Note substantial HEI base • Programme overlaps generic high power beam one • MICE now more integrated – but tensioned

  9. Neutron Source • Preparation for next generation facility • ISIS upgrade options studied (MW) • Strategy on ESS to be clarified • Small scale studies at present

  10. New Light Source • 4GLS terminated • NLS science case accepted • Source studies commissioned by PSD etc • STFC/DLS collaboration • Proposal to be made late 2009 • Parallel R&D studies to be considered

  11. ALICE • Major milestones achieved ! • Scope and role has evolved into generic test bed • Ownership transferred to ASTeC April 2009 • Exciting challenges ahead • Essential for EMMA • Funding shortfalls need resolution

  12. Superconducting RF Systems • Essential modern accelerator technology • ASTeC R&D priority • ALICE experience has been valuable • Development programmes initiated • Major infrastructure investment essential • Daresbury strategic plan formulated

  13. Electron Gun Development • Laser driven photo-gun activities initiated at Daresbury • ALICE gun and upgrades give vital experience • Photocathode R&D programme in place • Superconducting option to be studied (eg for NLS ?) • Gun test facility proposed at Daresbury • Collaborating with DLS

  14. HPPA and Targetry • Front End Test Stand proceeding within ISIS • Multiple funding sources • Significant HEI role • High power target studies led by TD staff • Strategic aims may need reassessment

  15. Novel Accelerators • Non-scaling FFAG studies – international collaboration • Neutrino Factory and medical applications • EMMA construction and PAMELA design (BT funded) • Plasma wake field developments • Theory team supported • CLF and ALPHA-X experimental programmes

  16. Core Science and Technology Development • Necessary for core skills • Beam dynamics expertise – physics, codes, etc • Magnetics, RF, cryogenics, laser optics, diagnostics and vacuum science programmes • ASTeC laboratory and test area infrastructure • HEI and international collaborations

  17. Accelerator Institutes • ASTeC is core partner in Cockcroft Institute • Programme collaborations with John Adams Institute • Note HEI partnerships beyond these 5 universities • Major new (8 year) bids to be reviewed 9-11 February • Complementary roles will be beneficial • Any emerging UK AST strategy must utilise STFC skills and experience at DL and RAL
