  1. ASTeC Research Strategy Mike Poole Director Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  2. ASTeC Strategic Objectives • Establish and consolidate UK core accelerator skills base • leadership and advice to stakeholders • Ensure international competitiveness • (people + programme) • Develop future LSF • (advice, design, prototype, construction) • Promote suitable CCLRC activities (DL + RAL) • Pursue underpinning technology • (inc. experiments) • Encourage collaborations • (AIs + HEIs + international) Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  3. Key Elements • Underpinning design studies • Beam dynamics simulations • New technology demonstration • Advanced beam test facilities • Major networking with HEIs and overseas laboratories • Knowledge transfer • Recruitment Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  4. Programme Outline • Project support • ERLP FETS MICE 4GLS ILC NFSRS DIAMONDXFEL FAIR • Underpinning generic studies • Types • Gun linac ERL synchrotron storage ring FFAG BTS • Categories • Conceptual (and Technical) Design Studies • Beam dynamics and Radiation Sources • Technologies - magnetics, RF diagnostics vacuum science collimation and dumps Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  5. ASTeC Funded LC Programme Extrapolated SR02 funds = £6M over 3 years Policy decision: • 25% on LC programme: £1.5M • of which £500k available to promote HEI studies • LC-ABD support to be demonstrated • Priority to synergetic activities (eg Light Sources) Agreed joint work packages with HEIs: • Collimation • Longitudinal bunch diagnostics • BPM R&D Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  6. ASTeC Funded Work Packages (3 year) 1. Collimation (ASTeC/Lancaster) • wake field simulations + experiments • £500k (inc RA) 2. Temporal Profile (ASTeC/Abertay) • electro-optic developments (+ small SP support) • ultrafast laser for tests • £600k (inc RA) 3. Advanced BPMs (ASTeC/Cambridge/UCL) • use in high precision spectrometry • £250k (inc RA) 4. Access to Test Beams at SLAC (All groups) • £100k support costs on ESA NB CCLRC also funds international advisory panel and travel administration Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  7. EU Programmes • Previous FP5: EUFELERF Cavity* • FP6 I3 contracts: HIPPI ELAN PHIN • FP6 awards: EuroTeV EUROFEL * Officially completed NB Major problem of overhead recovery FP7 presents major challenges Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  8. Underpinning R&D • Laser based accelerator systems (with CLF and HEIs) • Novel magnet systems (with EID and HEIs) • Vacuum science research collaborations (inc MMU contract) • Advanced RF technology (with HEIs) ca £500k pa staff costs(70% ASTeC) NB This excludes generic R&D elements of funded project programmes Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  9. Planned ASTeC Income 05/06 TOTAL ~ £8M Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  10. Planned ASTeC Expenditure 05/06 Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  11. Long Term Investment Priorities • Sustainable skill base • Funding of prototypes • Integrated SRF design/construction/testing facility • Build and operate e-FFAG Model (on ERLP) • Construct e and p Accelerator Test Facilities (DL + RAL) • Ramp up R&D funding prior to Capital Facility NB All of these involve HEI collaboration and cross-Council interests Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  12. Proposed SRF Technology Initiative • Maturity and applicability of superconducting RF systems • including 4GLS and ILC - potential major UK role • Demanding superconducting RF infrastructure • Integrated design, build and test (HP) - nowhere in Europe ! • Collaboration • ASTeC/HEIs/Industry/Faraday Partnership/NWDA • Exploit Daresbury infrastructure • Unsuccessful bids to PPARC (£10M ?) Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  13. Proposed site for EMMA: e-FFAG Model Build for £4M ? Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole

  14. Issues • Training • Prototype Funding • Infrastructure • Collaborations • Publications Cockcroft/ASTeC Joint Workshop Jan 06 M W Poole
