Background • SDMX sponsors launch initiative in 2001 (BIS, ECB, Eurostat, IMF, OECD, World Bank, UNSD) • Focus is use of new technology in the field of statistical exchange – improve efficiency, quality, timeliness • Primarily for aggregate data and metadata at the international level • Designed in context of related standards (DDI [surveys], ISO-11179 [metadata], ISO 19115 [GIS], web standards)

Status of Standards • Version 1.0 Technical Specifications • SDMX published in November 2004 • Became ISO 17369 in May 2005 • Version 2.0 Technical Specifications • SDMX November 2005 • Has been submitted to ISO • Content-Oriented Guidelines • Cross-domain concepts, terminology, and classifications • Drafts now in public review through end of April 2006 • SDMX intends to act as a forum for domain standardization, relying on other international organizations

Recent/Coming Events • CCSA Meeting in March 2006, NYC • SDMX adopted in principle • Implementation roadmap to be discussed in September 2006 meeting • Main issues concern viability of country-level deployment • UNSC Meeting in March 2006, NYC • Discussion concerning country-level deployment • SDMX adoption will be on agenda for March 2007 meeting • UN/ECE METIS Meeting and OECD SDMX Meeting April 2006 in Geneva • Discussion of SDMX and other standards within NSOs • Metadata framework document to be produced – includes SDMX • Discussions with UNSD, UNICEF/UNDG (DevInfo), and IHSN regarding implementation approach to SDMX and other standards • In cooperation with CountrySTAT/FAOSTAT • SDMX will hold a meeting in Washington DC in early December 2006

FAO and SDMX • Interest in using PC Axis support for SDMX formats (CountrySTAT/FAO STAT) • Interest in supporting statistical infrastructure based on SDMX registry technology (CountrySTAT/FAOSTAT) • Draft paper for discussion • Exchange of data and metadata between FAOSTAT and CountrySTAT partners via SDMX • Exchange of data and metadata between DevInfo and FAOSTAT/CountrySTAT via SDMX • FAO can use SDMX to help set domain standards – ease data collection

Benefits • Enhance efficiency of collection, processing, exchange, and dissemination of data • Improve quality, timeliness, and context for end users • Facilitate data and metadata interchange via interoperability of standards-based tools • Promote content standards to facilitate comparability and use
