  2. FAO Now • Mission: Foreign Area Officers are maritime international engagement professionals. They directly support the Maritime Strategy as the regional cultural, and language professionals. • Status: • - Goal: 400 IAW CNO direction by FY 2015 • - Today: 266 = operational (201) and training (65) billets • - Programmed: 300 = operational (235) and training (65) billets • FY-12 billet base: Operational (76%), Training (24%), Overseas (82%) • Joint (53%), Attaché (18%), Security Assistance Officer (36%), Navy Staff ( 42%) • 247 FAOs speak 30 different languages and are located in 63 countries

FAO Qualifications • Highly Competitive Selection Rate: • Primary candidates are URL with 8-12 YCS • In 2009 only 1 of 9 applicants accepted • In 2010 only 1 of 11 applicants accepted • In 2011 only 1 of 5 applicants accepted • 1710 (Qualified FAO AQD – FA#) Standards: • Language skills in a predominant language in their regions of expertise 2/2/2 (3/3/3 is the target) • POL-MIL Masters degree • 6 months of experience in a FAO billet • Regional Alignment by COCOM: • AFRICOM 11% - PACOM 32% - EUCOM 19% • CENTCOM 19% - SOUTHCOM 19% On track to have a force of 400 AC by 2015 ISO CNO Guidance for 2010, Executing the Maritime Strategy, SEP 2009
