The Romans didn’t know that Mt Vesuvius was a volcano, for they have never discovered one before. • Where the volcano had erupted before, the volcanic ash and rock that was leftover, had been withered down over the hundreds of years to make a very rich soil. • Which the Romans took to their advantage and grew crops and harvested them to trade. why did the Romans live by Mt Vesuvius?
