  1. Measurement challenge Learning to use vernier calipers

  2. First, let’s review

  3. OK, now let’s review

  4. Make some measurements • In groups of 2, measure the various things around the room and put your answers in a spreadsheet • Make all measurements in millimeters, and estimate to the 10th of a millimeter • Example: length=13.3 millimeters • Make the measurements once with rulers, and then again with vernier calipers

  5. Write a hypothesis • Write a hypothesis about whether rulers or vernier calipers are better for making length measurements (or maybe you think they’re equal) • Be prepared to share your hypothesis with the class

  6. Analysis • In your groups of 2, download the spreadsheets and look at the measurements. • Record the average value and standard deviation for each measurement, and indicate whether it was made with a meter stick or a caliper. • Put the averages and standard deviations in a Word document with “Insert Equation” • Based on the standard deviations, are the calipers more precise? If so, by how much?

  7. Write a conclusion • Write a conclusion that states whether your hypothesis was supported • Indicate whether rulers or vernier calipers are better for making measurements (or if they’re equal) • Refer to your analysis when writing your conclusion

  8. Write a lab report . . . • Download “Caliper Measurement Report” from the T-Drive • Complete the report with the data from your assigned spreadsheet • Be prepared to share your results • Put the document in the appropriate drop folder (T-Drive>>Share with Students>>Drop Folders>>00 Bricker>> etc.) • Remember to save it to your desktop and drag it into the drop folder
