UNIDO Industrial Energy Efficiency Programme Background The project is a joint collaboration between The Government, represented by the dti, the DoE and DEA The Government of Switzerland, represented by SECO UK Aid – DFID The project is implemented by UNIDO A 4-year Project started in 2010 The project is hosted at the National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC-SA) Business stakeholders -BUSA and NBI serve on the Project Steering Committee 2

Industrial Energy Efficiency Project Thematic focus areas Energy management systems (EnMS) and standards (ISO 50001) A system which enables an organisation to take a systematic approach towards achieving continual improvement of energy performance, energy efficiency and energy conservation. Energy systems optimization (steam, pumps,etc.) Shift the FOCUS from component optimization (5-10% saving potential) to system optimization (40-50%) 4

Principle of Systems Optimisation Electric utility feeder Transformer Motor breaker/ starter Adjustable speed drive (electrical) Fluid system Motor Coupling Pump At each interface, there are inefficiencies. The goal should be to maximize the overall cost effectiveness of the pumping, or how much flow is delivered per unit of input energy. Ultimate goal 7

Capacity Building Programme Elements, target groups and objectives 1 day Awareness Workshop 2 day Users Training Experts Training Target group: Process engineers, energy consultants, equipment vendors and service providers. Objective: To share in-depth technical information on undertaking an system energy assessment Target group: EE consultants, ESCOs, Specialists and others Objective: Experts that deliver energy performance improvements and best practices that are sustainable Target group: Process engineers, energy consultants, equipment vendors and service providers. Objective: To buy into Systems Optimisation and the project

  9. Capacity-building Energy Management Systems Training Expert level training started in January 2011 28 Trainees from industry and energy consultancies 7 industrial plant partners have agreed to participate and implement EnMS Each Plant assisted by 2-3 expert level trainees for 1 year 9

  10. Capacity-building Energy Systems Optimisation Training Expert level training started in June 2011 Expert Trainees from industry and energy consultancies are being identified Industrial plant partners are being approached to participate as host and candidate plants 10

Demonstration Projects The Project aims to enrol medium to large companies to demonstrate significant energy performance improvements The savings realised and the process embarked upon by the company will be documented and reported on. Each company will be consulted from the start to outline the plan for demonstration project rollout as well as concluding an agreement with UNIDO on the company’s commitments 11

Demonstration IEE projects The company will be required to: invest in and implement an Energy Management system and/or Systems optimisation opportunities; showcase energy savings from the implementation of an EnMS and/or systems optimisation - pumping, et al; determine an energy baseline and savings, measured and verified in compliance with SATS 50010; and allow publication of successes of the demonstration project, subject to an agreement on the content of such a publication by both the company and UNIDO. 12

SME Audit Programme The overall purpose of the Energy Audit is to: Assist selected SME’s to quantify their energy consumption and identify the significant energy users (SEU’s) within their processes. Be used as a tool to identify potential opportunities for the reduction and more efficient use of energy within the plant as part of an Energy Management Plan Day 1: Energy Consultants meet company owners/managers and complete an energy questionnaire, conduct plant walk through Day 2: Energy Consultants revisit the plant to establish significant energy use, Day 3: Verify information and collate data, identify improvement opportunities, and conduct feasibility analysis on the improvement options 13

SME Audit Programme The criteria used in the selection of energy consultants for this SME energy audit programme are as follows: Preference will be given to those consultants who have and are participating in the Energy Management Systems, Pumps, Compressed Air, Steam, Fan Systems Optimisation training workshops. A history of high quality contracts completed for the in the area of Energy Auditing 14
