Exploring Certainty and Doubt Through Partner Discussions

In this engaging activity, partners will explore concepts of certainty and doubt by identifying images, sharing personal reflections, and discussing meaningful questions. First, participants will walk around the room to spot differences in paired images. Then, they'll individually list things they are certain and doubtful about in their lives. After circling one certainty and one doubt, partners will have a conversation to delve deeper, addressing why they feel certain or what causes their doubts. This reflective discussion fosters deeper understanding and connection.

  1. Seeing Double With a partner, walk around the room and see if you can identify the two images in each picture. At the end, we’ll talk about the answers together as a class.

  2. Certainties Make a list of things in your life that you are certain of.

  3. Doubt Make a list of things in your life that you have doubts about.

  4. Certainties and Doubts Now circle 1 or 2 certainties and doubts to talk about with a partner.

  5. Certainty Discuss these questions for one of the items that you circled from your “certainty” list. Then your partner can discuss one as well. If you both finish discussing one, you can discuss more, if you like. • Why are you so certain about these things? What do you base your certainty on? • Can you imagine a circumstance that would change this certainty?

  6. Doubt Discuss these questions for one of the items that you circled from your “doubt” list. Then your partner can discuss one as well. If you both finish discussing one, you can discuss more items from your list. 1. What is something that you have doubts about? What causes these doubts? 2. What type of circumstance can you imagine that would change this doubt to certainty? 3. Have you had anything in your life that you were certain of at one time, but now have doubts about? What is it, and what happened?
